Annie Echols Hinton, 79, passed on Saturday, January 10, 2026, in Atlanta, GA.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. EST on Saturday, January 17, 2026 at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 1 Nuckols Rd, Phenix City, AL with Rev. Gregory Sutton, officiating. Burial in the church cemetery.
Sister Annie Echols Hinton born on March 26, 1946, in Russell County, AL to the late Mr. Willie Echols, Sr. and the late Mrs. Annie Laura Echols. Born into a loving family, Annie lived a genuine life that exemplified her love of God. She was a mother, a sister, an aunt, a friend, and a loving child of God. Many affectionately called her “Sister” and “Auntie.”
Annie confessed her belief in Jesus Christ at a very early age. She joined and faithfully served her Christian journey with her Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church family. On a daily and constant walk with God, Sis. Hinton studied her Word. She found strength in reading her Holy Bible and the Daily Bread. These became one of her most favorite things to do along with spending time with her family, traveling to support each other and fellowship together. Annie loved cooking big meals, and, of course, baking her delicious cakes and pies.
Annie was a scholar full of wisdom and knowledge who was educated in Russell County School District until she started a professional career with Douglas and Loman Company as a civil servant. She worked diligently at the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer Newspaper until she joined the faculty and staff at Central High School as a Child Nutrition Program Head Baker for Phenix City School System. She later retired after 10 years of vested service with our school community.
On December 24, 1962, Annie united in Holy Matrimony with the love of her life, Mr. Otis “Big Boy” Hinton. Their union brought so much joy as they became the proud parents to their children. “Big Boy” and Annie are united once again. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Willie Pearl Robinson; and her four brothers, John Echols, Henry Echols, Eugene Echols, and Frank Echols. Then early on Saturday, January 10, 2026 at 3:00 am in the wee hours of the morning, God saw fit to gently close her eyes and welcome her into enteral rest. She was surrounded by her loving family at Emory Hospital in Midtown Atlanta, GA.
Annie leaves to cherish her greatest memories, her two devoted daughters, Wanda (Willie) Cotton and Kimberly (Anthony, II) Hinton-Poole both of Phenix City, AL; two dedicated sons, Stanley (Karen) Hinton of Fayetteville, GA and Steven (Carla) Hinton of Phenix City, AL; ten grateful grandchildren, Cedric (Kayla) Cotton of Rochester, NY, Asia Hinton and Aaron Hinton of Fayetteville, GA, Jykerria Hinton, Keondre Hinton, Ravon Robinson, Teddy Austin, Gerald Austin, Anthony Tate Poole, and Kinslee Poole all of Phenix City, AL; ten great-grandchildren; five bonus children, Carolyn Walker of Smiths Station, AL, Deborah (Eddie) Lowe, Tracy (Gerry) Strong both of Phenix City, AL, Tommie (Lartonyar) Robinson of College Station, TX, and Lakeisha (Antoine) Walton of Atlanta, GA; one sister, Hattie Lawrence of Columbus, GA; two brothers, Willie Echols, Jr. and James (Julia Mae) Echols of Phenix City, AL; one aunt, Erma Hinton of Baltimore, MD; two sisters-in-law, Stephanie Echols and Pinkie Echols both of Columbus, GA; two devoted cousins, Betty Jean Pritchett and Dora Robinson; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
