Bernard Garlick, Jr. passed away on the morning of May 14th, 2024 in Columbus, Georgia after a lengthy illness. He was 78 years old. He was born in Newport News, Virginia to Bernard and Gladys Garlick on the 24th of December, 1945.
Bernard grew up in Phoebus, Virginia. He entered the United States Army in July of 1966 and served honorably for 20 years until his military retirement in 1986. He served three (3) tours in Vietnam and was assigned military duties in numerous locations both in the States and overseas. After his Army retirement he lived in Manhattan, Kansas until 2012 when he moved to Columbus, Georgia.
Bernard graduated from George P. Phenix High School in Hampton, Virginia in 1966. He received a bachelor’s degree in applied management in 1996 from Upper Iowa University.
Bernard was a proud military Veteran and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans; the American Legion; and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).
Although Bernard did not attend church regularly, he was both a godly and a god - fearing man. The fruits of his life demonstrated his faith and belief in God. He was the husband of one wife with whom he brought up three (3) children. There was nothing more precious to him than his family and it showed in the life he led and all the things he did to give his family a good life and a good foundation of morality and Christian principles.
Bernard was an outgoing and social person. He was a talker and enjoyed reminiscing about his Army exploits with other old soldiers. He loved telling stories about his early life growing up in Virginia. His children can tell these stories verbatim because they have heard them told and retold so many times.
The loss of this good man weighs heavily upon every one of his family members. His passing has left a void that our memories of him are not adequate to fill.
Bernard was preceded in death by his mother, Gladys Cleo Garlick; his father, Bernard Garlick, Sr.; his brother, Thomas Edward Maker; and his sister, Martha May Lindsey.
Bernard is survived by his wife of over 51 years, May Florence Garlick; three children, Mary Alice Garlick-Herring of Abilene, Kansas, Bernard Garlick, III (wife: Ayanna) of Grovetown, Georgia, Georgette Cleo Garlick of Columbus, Georgia; nine (9) grandchildren; two great grandchildren; a sister, Cleo Pearl Byrd of Hampton, Virginia; an aunt, Gertrude Stewart of League City, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
