Charlie James Word, born March 19, 1949, to Lewis Word and Annie Mae Word, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2026.
Charlie matriculated through the Russell County school system and dedicated over 20 years of service to the Columbus, Georgia Housing Authority, retiring with pride. He was also a devoted member of St. Peter A.M.E. Church in Seale, Alabama.
Charlie had a deep love for the simple joys of life: riding horses, raising pigs, farming, gardening, and the timeless style of cowboy boots and hats. He delighted in spending time with his grandchildren, sharing laughter, stories, and a plate of his favorite neckbones. He loved traveling and exploring new places, but he always returned to his beloved Ford F-150, kept pristine and polished, a true reflection of his care and attention. Charlie also took pride in his work towing vehicles with his wrecker, always ready to lend a helping hand.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Annie Mae Word, as well as five sisters and six brothers, whom he will joyfully reunite with in heaven.
He is lovingly remembered by his two children, April Word-Carter, married to Malcolm Carter, and Christopher James Word, married to Fannie. He cherished his eight grandchildren: Freddie Word, Jar’Malcolm Carter, Jar’Malchi Carter, Jar’Miracle Carter, Cedric Gary, Kattia Gary, Marcus Harris, and Jaquann Oates. Charlie also leaves behind his two goddaughters, Patrice Dorsey and Lativa Whittlesey, as well as many nieces, nephews, and a wide circle of family and friends who will forever treasure his memory. Mr. Charlie Word was recently divorced.
Charlie James Word will be remembered for his warmth, generosity, and the quiet joy he brought to every life he touched. His family, friends, and community will carry his spirit forward, inspired by the love, laughter, and steadfast values he shared.
