Dorothy Gainer was born to the late Means Abron Sr. and Minnie James Abron. She was the youngest girl of 12 children.
She joined Gaines Chapel AME Church at an early age. She enjoyed growing up in the church, and playing the piano. Dorothy was educated in the Muscogee, and Phenix City School System. She was also a proud graduate of South Girard High School.
Dorothy continued her education at Albany State University, in which she received a Bachelor of Science in Education. Her teaching career began in the Phenix City Schools System, and continued in the District of Columbia School System until her retirement. She was a dedicated teacher who loved her 1st and 2nd grade students.
Following her husband Henry Gainer's passing, she relocated to Ft. Washington, Maryland. She became an active member of Grace United Methodist Church, where she served as an usher. Dorothy cherished her time with her dog Brownie. She also found joy in shopping, and traveling.
Later in life Joseph Boutté became a cherished friend and companion. They shared a love for traveling and visiting family. Including their tradition of traveling and tailgating with Southern University football team. In 2018, she returned to Phenix City and rejoined Gaines Chapel AME Church. She enjoyed life with the assistance of her nieces who accompanied her for shopping, dining, and leisure.
Her nieces Dorothy (her namesake) Nesbitt, Vicki (Jimmie) Phillips, and great niece June (Corris) Horne will fondly remember her, as well her great-great nieces Avie and Arie Horne, who affectionately called her "Little Lady." She will be dearly missed by her extended family and friends.
Mrs. Dorothy was my constant reminder that God is Good...All the time! & All the time...God is good! She was a firecracker and kept people in line. She'd let you know when something didn't sit right with her and she kept things honest. She also cared deeply about people, and I am forever thankful for the way she loved my momma who resides on the Memory Care side of the assisted living home where Mrs. Dorothy lived. Her family loved and cared for her so well. Whenever she was wearing a new outfit, she made sure to give credit to Vicki. When she dressed up, she really showed out! She talked about her grand babies often and she thought the world of them! She was a "Little Lady" that made a really big impact in my life and countless others.
My deepest condolences to the family of Mrs. Dorothy !! She was a very sweet person and we spent many years tailgating with her at the Southern University Football games when she would visit Baton Rouge. She was loved by so many people here ❤️
