Georgia Lee Sanks Smith, 73, of Columbus, GA, passed on Tuesday, June 23, 2026 in Columbus, GA.
Graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. EST, on Wednesday, July 1, 2026 at Green Acres Cemetery. There is no public viewing.
Mrs. Georgia Lee Sanks Smith, age 73, of Columbus, Georgia, peacefully transitioned from this life on June 23, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.
Georgia was born on July 10, 1952, in Phenix City, Alabama, to the late Lucinda Jones Sanks and Richard Lee Crowell. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Sanks and Bertha Lee Sanks Edmond, and her brother, David Sanks.
Georgia was a faithful member of Mt. Mariah Baptist Church in Phenix City, Alabama, where she faithfully served as President of the Senior Usher Board, sang in the choir, and was an active member of the Missionary Department. Her faith guided her life and was reflected in the love, compassion, and service she extended to others.
She worked for several years at Bibb Mill, where she was known not only for her hard work and dedication but also for her keen sense of fashion and vibrant personality. She later worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) at Parkwood Nursing Home, providing compassionate care to those entrusted to her. Throughout her life, Georgia devoted herself to helping others, becoming a foster parent to more than 750 children and serving as a caregiver to 26 senior adults. Her selfless service touched countless lives and left a lasting legacy of love, kindness, and generosity.
She leaves to cherish her memory her beloved husband of 55 years, Eugene Smith, Sr.; her loving children, Katrina (Christopher) Watson, Eugene "Darell" Smith, and Jacinda Lashae Smith; two grandsons, Christopher Watson, Jr. and Christian Watson; her sister, Fannie Mae Sanks; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and dear friends.
To know Georgia was to know a woman who loved shopping and never sugarcoated anything. She enjoyed finding a good deal, spending time with family, and sharing laughter with those she loved. She spoke her mind, stood firmly in her convictions, and told it exactly as she saw it. Yet beneath that strong and straightforward exterior was a heart overflowing with love. She loved fiercely, cared deeply, and gave selflessly to those around her. Whether opening her home to children in need, caring for the elderly, or supporting her family through life's joys and challenges, Georgia's life was a testament to compassion, strength, and unwavering devotion.
Her nurturing spirit, unwavering strength, and devotion to family, church, and community will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Though she is no longer with us in body, the love she shared, the lives she touched, and the legacy she built will remain forever in our hearts.
"Well done, thou good and faithful servant."
Matthew 25:23
