Halcy Colquitt, 84, passed on Friday, May 16, 2025 in Smiths, AL.

Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m EST on Saturday, May 24, 2025 at Motts Church of Christ located at 326 Lee Road 249, Smiths Station, AL with Bro. Joe Miles, eulogist, Bro. McArthur Cooper, pastor officiating. Public viewing will be from 9:00 a.m EST to 10:00 a.m EST, Saturday, May 24, 2025.

Our beloved mother, Halcy O. Colquitt, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 16, 2025, at the age of 84. Halcy was born to Mader Lee Gates and George Richard Hodges in Okolona, Mississippi. She was the youngest of four children. Her mother, father, brother, George R. Hodges, Jr, and sisters, Dorothy Franklyn, and Corinne McLaurin, preceded her in death. As a child, Halcy was part of the Great Migration that took her family first to Collierville, Tennessee and then to Gary, Indiana where her parents joined a vibrant and active African American community. Halcy was a graduate of the Theodore Roosevelt High School Class of 1957. She later went on to earn a degree in Nursing from Indiana University Northwest.

Halcy fell in love with Symeon Colquitt, Sr. while attending high school. They joined in holy matrimony on April 20, 1957, and became active in their Gary Indiana community. They dedicated their love to one another, to family, and to friends. To that union, four devoted children were born: three sons, Keenan, Sr.; Marlon, Sr,; and Symeon, Jr.; and a daughter, Symone. Halcy adored and valued her children. She stood solidly in the gap for each of them. She nurtured, protected, guided, and loved them individually and collectively. Her ability to put unconditional love into action, extended far beyond her home and reached to family, friends, and community. Halcy enjoyed celebrating life and traveling. She found great pleasure exposing her grandchildren and great grandchildren to cultural, educational adventures and gatherings of family near and far. She referred to them as “the apple of my eye” and was amazed that the love she felt for her children could grow exponentially deeper with the next generations. As entrepreneurs, Symeon and Halcy established The Market Basket and Carry Out, a local fresh food market that provided wholesome fruits, vegetables, food, and community connection.

In 1990, Halcy relocated to Smiths Station Alabama to fulfill the dream that she and her husband had. With a smile as bright as the noon day sun, Halcy enjoyed her work as an industrial and geriatric nurse. Her patients received skilled and compassionate care during her tenure at Gary Methodist Hospital, the Budd Company, the State of Georgia Health System, and the Central Alabama Veteran’s Administration Medical Center at Tuskegee.

Halcy enjoyed her personal relationship with God and accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior. She honored God to the highest level and was committed to doing and keeping His commandments. She strived to “do Bible things, the Bible way.” As a member of Motts Church of Christ, Halcy was particularly fond of Bible study, singing and traveling with the Mott’s Accapella Singers, and making a batch of spaghetti for friends and family day at the church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Symeon, Sr. Halcy leaves to cherish her memory her sons: Keenan Y. Colquitt, Sr., Marlon B. Colquitt, Sr., Symeon Colquitt, Jr.; and, a daughter, Symone Colquitt (James McCollum); grandchildren: Dr. Keenan Colquitt, Jr. (Jessica), Damien Anderson (Latisha), Kelly M. Colquitt Johnson, Marlon Colquitt, Jr. (Ella), Brianna Harris, Dr. Elan C. Hope (Aaron), Asha C. McCollum, Symeon Lewis Colquitt, Jasmine J. Colquitt, Jade Ashley Colquitt; great-grandchildren: Nivea Anderson, Nevaeh Anderson, Nya Anderson, Nia Anderson, Jayla Joy Colquitt, Ahlai Harris, Ava Harris, Anika Harris, August Elijah Hope, Ellington Symone Hope, Xavier Theodore Hope, William Johnson, and Navari Lobe, plus a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends who will deeply miss her love and kindness.
