Deacon Harry James Hughes was born June 8, 1946, in Fort Benning, Ga., to the late Clarence Hughes and the late Leola Denard Hughes. On Thursday, August 13, 2026, God dispatched an angel to claim one of His children.
Deacon Harry confessed Christ at an early age and joined Franchise Missionary Baptist Church in Phenix City, AL. In his early years, he was a member of the Franchise Missionary Baptist Church Choir.
Deason Harry attended South Girard High School in Phenix City. He was employed by Opelika Manufacturing Company in Phenix City for many years and retired.
Deacon Hughes was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carolyn Hughes; parents, Clarence and Leola Hughes; and brothers, Preston Hughes and Henry Hughes.
Deacon Harry’s love for his wife, children, and grandchildren was undeniable. After her passing, he deeply missed the love of his life, Carolyn, to whom he had been married for almost 58 years.
Deacon Hughes met daily with his “breakfast club” buddies. They, like everyone who knew him, enjoyed his boisterous laugh and warm “Colgate smile.” He lovingly teased, taunted, and joked around, making those who loved him and even strangers laugh with him.
He was a mentor and counselor to the young who were seeking the Lord’s presence and guidance in their spiritual walk, and he had been a devoted servant of God in the prison ministry. Deacon Harry was a powerful prayer warrior, praying with and for others. He reflected the love and care of Jesus Christ. He was deep and strong in the Word of God and willingly allowed the Holy Spirit to use him to comfort friends and family as he encouraged them to trust the Lord and remain strong in the faith.
Deacon Hughes leaves to cherish him: a devoted daughter, Kimberly Hughes, and a devoted son, Ivan (Kristin) Hughes; grandchildren, Ikeyla (Jon) McLaughlin, Jerrean Hughes, and Kaden Hughes; two sisters, Patricia Hughes and Earkia Wilson; in-laws, Ronella (James) Mitchener, Pamela Thomas, Vivian Thomas, and Vickie Hughes; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends; extended family member N. Lorraine Potter; and neighbor Gwen Pitts.

Dad you got me with this. This was a shocker 💔 You left us in a twinkling of an eye. It's comforting to know you did not suffer. I always joked that mom could not do anything without you trying to do it too. So, now you are with mom, your beautiful wife, Carolyn again 💞 Mom, is probably telling you stop being so loud. 😄You will be forever in our hearts. Ikey, the grandchildren, and I will cherish the memories that God allowed us. You and I affectionly called one another "ugly". Dad, we miss you with your ugly self! 🥰 Love Kimberly❤️
To the Hughes family sorry for your loss. My sincere condolences.🙏🏽
Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Uncle Harry was a light and he shined every where he went he was a father to me took me fishing and showed me how to be a man. I truly love this man.

Cousin Kim & I-Key- Uncle Harry's unexpected passing leaves such a tremendous void in our hearts. He loved the Lord with all of his heart, and his faith was evident in the way he lived his life. He has been reunited with Autie Carolyn, and they are walking around heaven, hand-in-hand. We love you both!
Kim, I-Key and family, We offer our sincere condolences and we are praying for your comfort and strength. It saddens us to hear that Harry is no longer here; but there is joy knowing he is with the Lord and the love of his life, Carolyn. He would let you know that he knew the Lord; and at gatherings he let you know that he knew the game of cards. There are so many good memories of our gatherings.
May he rest peacefully. 🙏🏾❤️🕊
Rest in peace my friend you are really going to be miss( AKA moonie )
Kim & Ikey, you have our deepest condolences on the sudden passing of Uncle Harry. His presence will be sorely missed at family functions. He always had a kind and wise word. He was certainly the loud and lively one at so many memorable family occasions as well. He will be missed but God has called him home and he is with Aunt Carolyn again. RIH💗
My cousin, brother and best friend, we had so many memories and talks. So much knowledge about the LORD! We talked and kid with each other everytime we was together. Harry would leave the pool room to come to the quilting room and have the ladies laughing @ so many topics! You called me every morning around 7am/7:30am telling me to "get out of that bed" Thursday morning I did not hear from you! I know you missed Carolyn so much often talking about the type of bottle water and sodas she liked or what type of breakfast sandwiches she liked! You are with her now, I'm a little sad, wish I had called him, maybe he had something to say! Gonna miss our talks and riding out. Will never forget about you my cousin, brother and friend!
Mr. Hughes will be greatly missed. He was a inspiration to me. My deepest condolences to you and your family during this difficult time. I'm truly sorry for your loss. May God give you strength, comfort, and peace, and may the memories you shared bring you comfort in the days ahead. Please know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
Kim/ I-Key, "Wishing you peace and comfort during this difficult time."
Kim and Ikey, I am so sorry to hear of the loss of (Harry) he was truly an awesome person. I will miss him sitting behind me in church on Sunday services, and on Wednesday night bible study, he closes out with the evening prayer 😔 I always asked how he was doing after the death of Carolyn, always a smile , "I'm good". I pray God give yall strength and mercy on this difficult journey of sorrow.😔🙏🏽 Even though ya'll feel alone, remember this: your mom and dad loved you dearly... but God loved them both, and needed them to come home and rest..😔🙏🏽

Kim and Ikey, I am so sorry for your loss, and mine, too. Now, I don't have anyone to talk to and engage in "smack" talk. Harry had a unique way of making everyone laugh. Above all, he was more than a brother-in-law. He was my friend. Thinking of you both.
