Deacon James C. Cooper, a devoted servant of the Lord, peacefully transitioned from this life on Sunday, November 19, 2023, in Columbus, GA. He was born on April 21, 1949, in Russell County to the late Arthur Cooper and Ardella Cooper Butler.
After dedicating an astounding 33 years of his life to Jerusalem Baptist Church, where he faithfully served as a Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, and choir member, James felt a calling to be with his beloved wife at Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church, believing that a family should worship together. There, he continued his dedicated service as a Deacon and became an active member of the Senior Ministry.
James's deep love for the church began at a young age, nurtured and inspired by his uncle, Rev. W.L. Lewis, who played a significant role in shaping his spiritual journey. His unwavering commitment to the church community was a testament to his lifelong devotion to his faith.
"Bear" Cooper was a graduate of Wachoochee High School, class of 1967, in Smith Station, AL. He had a true passion for sports, excelling in football and basketball during his school years. In addition to his achievements on the field, he coached basketball, softball and was a hardcore fan of the Alabama Crimson Tide.
For 26 years, Cooper dedicated his working life to Swift Spinning Mill on 2nd Ave in Columbus, Georgia, where he held the role of lead spinner. He also contributed his skills to Wachoochee High School for a decade before retiring.
Deacon James C. Cooper is reunited in eternal rest with his beloved parents, Arthur and Ardella Cooper, as well as his dear brothers, Arthur and Raymond Cooper.
He leaves behind a treasure trove of cherished memories for his loving wife of 39 years, Mary Cooper, who was the anchor of his life; nieces, Chantinell Trimble and Angela None Reed; nephews Stacy Thomas, Min. Bruce Dewayne Cooper, Min. Arthur Cooper, Jr. and Ramond Cooper; his memory lives on in the hearts of his sister, Susie "Jerry" Cooper, and brother, Charles Colquitt; remembered by his sisters-in-law, Frankie Cooper, Cheryl Cooper, and Cookie Colquitt, and a special brother in Christ, Deacon Marcus Wilson.
Deacon James C. Cooper's impact on his community, his dedication to his faith, and his love for his family and friends will forever be remembered. He has now found peace in the arms of the Lord, leaving behind a legacy of love and devotion that will continue to inspire us all.
