Mr. John Phillips, 86, of Phenix City, AL passed Thursday, August 21, 2025 in Phenix City, AL.
Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. EST on Friday, August 29, 2025 in the C.T. Chapel of Taylor Funeral Home. Interment to follow in Nero Baptist Church, Hurtsboro, AL.
John Phillips Sr., father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 21, 2025. He was born on May 20, 1939, in Barbour County, Alabama, to the late Hula Rogers and David "Bubba" Phillips. He was preceded in death by his only sibling, Bobby Lee Phillips of Union Springs, Alabama.
John confessed his life to Jesus Christ at an early age and was a faithful member of Nero Baptist Church for many years.
He received his education at Rebecca Comer High School, where he began cultivating the strong work ethic that would guide him throughout life. As a young man, John worked alongside his grandparents, Adam and Melvina Rogers, on their farm—an experience that instilled in him values of humility and perseverance.
Following his early years in farming, John worked at Swift Mill before devoting much of his professional career to serving as a chauffeur for the Martin family. From 1965 until his retirement in 2007, he worked with Martin Theaters, later known as Carmike Theatres. His professionalism and warm personality left a lasting impression on the Martin family and all who had the privilege of knowing him through his years of service.
A lifelong baseball enthusiast, John was a gifted pitcher in organized leagues and a devoted supporter of the Atlanta Braves. He shared this passion with his brother, who was equally talented in the sport. His love for the game sparked many spirited conversations and joyful memories with family and friends. Beyond the ball field, John cherished the outdoors, often spending his time hunting, fishing, and enjoying the company of his loyal hunting dogs.
John leaves to cherish his memory of his children: Debra Upshaw (Marc), Cynthia Eddings (Michael), and John Phillips Jr. He was preceded in death by his son Marcus Sellers and daughter Lynn Phillips. His grandchildren include Diamonn Upshaw, Tyler Upshaw, Jordan Hall, Ahmon Hall, Chaundra Horace, Jaron Phillips, and McKayla Phillips.
He is also remembered by his siblings Juanita Rogers and Donnie Rogers, and was preceded in death by Beverly Rogers, Barbara Earl, Charles Earl, and Calvin Rogers. John will also be remembered fondly by his aunt, Lillie King, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
John Phillips Sr. will be remembered for his faith, his love of baseball, and the kindness he extended. His legacy lives on in the many hearts that were blessed to know him.
John Phillips was my Uncle Bubba. I have fond memories of come to his house and feeding us something that his recent hunt and making us guess what it was, and sharing embarrassing stories of my father as a child.
