Johnie Floyd, 71, of Opelika, AL passed Thursday, December 23, 2021 in Grapevine, TX.
Funeral service will be held 12 noon EST Wednesday, January 5, 2022 in the C.T. Chapel of Taylor Funeral Home. Interment to follow in Lakeview Memory Gardens Phenix City, AL. Visitation is Tuesday, January 4, 2022 from 2-5 p.m. EST.
Johnie Floyd was born August 21, 1950, to the late Annie Pearl Porch and Lucius Floyd, Sr, in Opelika, AL. As a young man, he was a popular student, star basketball player and 1968 graduate of South Girard HS, in Phenix City, AL. It was at South Girard where he would meet the love of his life, Cynthia Wiggins (Floyd), and they later would become husband and wife on December 10, 1971. After finishing HS, Johnie was awarded a basketball scholarship to Miles College in Birmingham, AL; however, he was drafted into the United States Air Force, where he would serve his country proudly during the Vietnam War! After his years of service to the Air Force were fulfilled, Johnie would return to Phenix City to be with his wife, and begin his next chapter of his life as a student at Auburn University. During his time at Auburn he proudly pledged as a member of Omega Psi Phi, Fraternity, Sigma Delta Chapter 1979, where he was the Ace of his line and earned the name, War Dog!.
On July 2, 1983, Johnie and Cynthia welcomed their one and only child, Terrence.
Johnie was a proud member of Fourth Street Missionary Baptist Church in Columbus, GA, where his family was guided by the late great, J. H. Flakes, Sr. He served on the layman committee at Fourth Street and he was also involved in his community as a Little league assistant baseball and football coach; along with being a head coach of St Patrickβs School basketball team, and other youth teams at the DA Turner YMCA!
Johnie is preceded in death by his parents Annie Pearl Porch and Lucius Floyd, Sr. his BELOVED brother, Lucius Floyd, Jr, wife, Cynthia W Floyd and cousin, James Wiggins.
He leaves behind some of the brightest minds from our tri-city area; son, Terrence Floyd; cousin, Voncile Kaplen. nieces, Nancy and LaQuita Floyd, Judy Dabney, Kanise Wiggins, Teisah Epps, Brittney Purnell and nephews, TaRondrick Floyd, Charles Crowell, Marquis and Joshua Purnell, Vincent Wiggins, Sr, Vincent Wiggins, Jr, Christopher Farley and Bertha Floyd, as well as COUNTLESS friends, relatives and associates.
Our deepest condolences to each member of the Floyd Family. May each tear that falls be a gentle reminder that you and your loved one meant so much to each other and that no loss or sorrow, time or distance can ever take that away. Wishing you strength for today and comfort in the days ahead.
