Kenneth Angelo Johnson affectionally known as “SILK,” was born Saturday, April 4, 1959 in Columbus, Georgia, to the late Edward & Carrie Boddie Johnson. Ken departed this life on Monday, December 2, 2019, at Piedmont Regional Hospital in Columbus, Georgia. He is preceded in death by his parents, a son, Johnnie “J.J.” Randolph, a sister, Linda Sims, and nephews, Romulus Bernard Sims, and Jeremie Perry Sims.
In 1977, Ken graduated from Central High School as an honor student and a star basketball player. He was a two-time Columbus Ledger Enquirer player of the year. His senior year at Central High School, he averaged 28 points, 12 rebounds, and he shot 70% from the field. This was unheard of for a 6’7” big man playing the wing position. Ken’s perimeter game was before the three-point shot was introduced into high school, college, and professional basketball. His final three college choices were Alabama, Louisville, and Clemson. He chose the University of Alabama, where he received a four-year basketball scholarship under the leadership of C. M. Newton. His final college game was played at Duke Cameron Indoor Stadium. In 1982, Ken graduated from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce and Business Administration. After college, he went to Cologne, Germany, and there he played basketball for one year.
Upon Ken’s return home in 2005, he started working with Phenix City Board of Education as the PE Coach, and he also worked with the After School Housing Authority Program.
Ken loved God and faithfully attended Gaines Chapel A.M.E. Church. He recently started attending St. John A.M.E. Church–Wende, under the leadership of his loving wife. He loved the church, and faithfully supported his wife and her ministry.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Pastor Andrea Spivey-Johnson; daughter, Lakiesha (Deondra) Richardson; five grandchildren, Nakayla Randolph-Moore, Brent “BJ” Randolph, Sydney Demines-Randolph, Ayanna Dixon, Airman Equisha Dixon; three great-grandchildren, Starr Dixon, Ivory Dixon, and Kaden Dixon; sister, Anne Hartman; mother-in-law, Jeanette Spivey; Brothers-in-law, Frank Spivey, Derrick Spivey, Fredrick Spivey; sisters-in-law, Katrina Spivey, Phyllis Spivey; nephews, Marcus Clint (Penny) Sims, Karsten Hartman; nieces, Kristal (Torrence) Brown, Kellye Hartman, Sharon Sims; special great-nephew, Brandon (Sylvia) Averette, special great-nieces Ebony Sims, Kayla Sims, Brittany Perry; special friends, Jimmy and Vicki Phillips, Bobby and Carolyn Wright, Victor Alexander, James and Dorcella Holmes, Roosevelt and Earnestine McCoy, Eddie Phillips, Eric Richardson, Mike Davis, St. John A.M.E. Thanks for helping keep me on th ed right path mr Johnson
I taught Kenneth in the third grade at Girard Elementary. He was smart, quiet, well-mannered, polite and a wonderful student. I am saddened to read of his death.
I had the pleasure to work with him at CFS several years ago. Kenneth was a really kind man and had a great since of humor!! Prayers for his family. He will be missed. S.Ferguson

I pray that God continues to keep you during this difficult time. The entire faculty and staff is truly missing your sweet spirit. The children ask about you everyday. Over time, we will all heal in Jesus' name. Forever missed and never forgotten. We love you Johnson family!
My deepest sympathy. Richard Day
I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Ken “Silk” Johnson. He was such a great athlete, but an even greater person. I began school with Ken when we both attended Girard Elementary. I covered his basketball career in high school and college as a sports writer for the Citizen, Ledger-Enquirer and Opelika-Auburn News. He was always more than just the subject of stories for me. He was a friend. I will miss him. There is a hole in my heart because I have lost a dear friend who I can say I truly loved. Rest well my friend. I hope to see you again someday.
Our staff will continue to keep your family in our prayers. We thank you for allowing us to serve your family.
