Mr. Lonnie Burkes was born on July 17, 1966 to the late Mattie Pearl Burkes and Ernest Edmonds Sr. in Phenix City, Alabama. Lonnie Burkes departed this life on July 10th, 2025, just a week before his 59th birthday at Emory Decatur Hospital.
Lonnie spent his early childhood in Phenix City until his family moved to Columbus, GA where he continued through elementary school, junior high, and high school. During his high school years, he was an exceptional athlete, playing varsity football. Lonnie loved and could play almost any sport, although football was his passion.
Lonnie tragically lost his mother whom he was very close to during his senior year in high school which suddenly. Nonetheless, as was his nature, he always took things in a very humble way. He then moved to Augusta, Georgia with his older brother Brady Burkes Sr. Lonnie was and always has been a warrior, because at the age of 26 he developed kidney problems. Eventually, he was put on dialysis which required doctor visits 3 times a week. Still, he continued to work until his doctor eventually stopped him. He never complained, and throughout all of his circumstances Lonnie continued to keep a good outlook on life.
Lonnie had a great mind, and a great sense of humor. He always remembered everyone's birthday and would call and wish all of his brothers and sisters a Happy Birthday as well as his nieces, nephews and other members of his family.
Lonne was loved by everyone, because he showed love to everyone. He not only showed this love to his family, but also to his neighbors, friends, co-workers and anyone around him; never complaining even when he wasn't feeling well and the doctor visits and the dialysis treatments became more & more stressful.
Lonnie will be truly missed by anyone and everyone who knew him.
He leaves to cherish his memories, three sisters, Mattie (Donovan) Spearman of Sandy Springs, GA, Mary (Joseph) Alexander of Phenix City, AL., Georgia Olivier of Clarkston, GA, one who is as a sister Contessa Calhoun of Columbus, GA; Four brothers, Brady (Edna) Burkes of Jonesboro, GA, Frankie (Diane) Burkes of Cleveland, OH.
