Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. EST on May 10, 2025 at Spirit Filled Ministries located at 3898 Mulberry Dr., Columbus, GA with Rev. O.D. Holland, eulogist, and Pastor Zephaniah Baker, officiating. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery. Public viewing is 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST on May 9, 2025.

Deacon Mary Della (Kindell) Holland was born on December 25, 1939, to the union of S.T. and Lessie (Simpson) Kindell of Opelika, AL. She was the middle child to her older brother, J.C. Kindell and younger brother, Willie Kindell. Mary Della accepted Christ at an early age at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Marvin, AL. After meeting and dating her future husband King Moses, who was a faithful member of Union Grove Baptist Church, also in Marvin AL, which was down the road from her church, she decided to join his church.

As Mary Della was growing up, her mother, Lessie showed her the importance of cooking and preparing meals for her family. Mary Della attended Sanford High School in Marvin, Alabama. While King Moses was dating Mary Della, he asked her to marry him and they were married in Alabama. To this union Linda was born. Soon after the family moved to Detroit, MI and to this union, Chris was born and she always treated Rufus as one of her own.

After arriving in Detroit, King Moses and Mary Della lived with his Uncle William (Shug) and Aunt Ronella Malone. Mary Della assisted Aunt Ronella with any task while living with them. While earning a living as a mechanic, Moses was able to move Mary and the children to Bewick St. on Detroit’s Eastside. While Moses studied hard and earned his Doctor of Automotive Mechanic, Mary Della unselfishly provided the love and support that was needed so that Moses could be the top of his class and succeed. He often told his son, Chris that if it wasn’t for your mother, we wouldn’t be where we are. This is because Mary Della was an exceptional homemaker who enjoyed cooking and baking and maintaining the home. She knew how to give firm discipline without being aggressive and she was also very efficient at handling the finances for the family. She not only took great care of her immediate family, but she also took care of her extended family, friends and church members! She always remembered all of her nieces’, nephews’ and godchildren’s birthdays. Everyone enjoyed Mary Della’s chocolate cake! She would always bake a chocolate cake for Moses and Linda, a German chocolate cake for Chris, a pecan pie for her brother-in-law, O.D. and she cooked one of Rufus’ and Moses’ favorite dish which was chitterlings!

She had a wonderful bond with all her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. She had a great relationship with her sister-in-law, Pink Daisy while they were raising their families in Detroit. She also enjoyed time with her brother Willie and sister-in-law Peggy. While visiting family in Alabama and Georgia she spent time with her brother, JC and sisters-in-law, Eula, Mary Virginia and Rosie. Mary Della and the family would frequently travel to Syracuse, New York for family gatherings with her brother-in-law O.D. and her sisters-in-law Hattie and Susie. Mary Della also enjoyed attending the Simpson, Kindell and Holland family reunions.

Mary Della had a sweet and kind spirit, and she never had to raise her voice to get her point across. After Moses received his Doctor of Automotive Mechanic and became a machine operator at Ford Motor Company, he and Mary Della moved the family to Tuller St. on Detroit’s westside. While in Detroit, Moses and Mary Della decided to join Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit where they worshipped and served faithfully. She decided to become a Sunday School teacher where she taught for many years. Her daughter, Linda followed in her footsteps and also became a Sunday School Teacher. Mary Della was always supportive with her words and actions. She had a gentle, kind and firm demeanor. When Moses wanted to expand his calling into becoming a Deacon, she asked Mary Della if would become a Deaconess and she accepted the calling of Deaconess Mary Della. She continued to study scripture extensively and she earned and accepted the calling of being a Deacon. After much studying she was ordained as a Deacon. Mary Della was very informative of the Bible and life and she studied the Bible all the time. She would tell her children “life and the scriptures work hand in hand.” Mary Della’s roles and positions at the church included Deaconess, Deacon, Usher, Sunday School Teacher and a Powerful Prayer Warrior. Mary’s knowledge and memory of scriptures was impeccable! She would often assist Moses with scripture homework while they were studying to become Deacon and Deaconess. Mary Della had a variety of careers. She was a Department Sales Clerk at Hudson’s, a Machine Operator of picture frames, Financial Advisor, and she created her own day care for her godchildren.

While accomplishing all of these things, Mary Della decided to further her education. She enrolled and graduated top of her class with a degree in general studies. Mary Della’s soft voice and attention to detail commanded your attention and respect. She is a woman who has set a high standard to follow, and her son, Chris is following his mother’s loving and caring footsteps. Linda and Rufus followed with their kind heart and spirit too. Mary Della encouraged her husband and children to be the best that they can be and to keep God first! Moses always told Chris that if it wasn’t for his mom they wouldn’t have accomplished as much as we have due to who she is and what she stands for!

Upon retirement, King Moses and Mary Della decided to relocate to Columbus, Georgia. They became church members of Spirit Filled Ministries with Pastor Wayne Baker where they continued to learn, study and spread God’s Word! Everyone at Spirit Filled Ministries loved Mary Della and Moses and they were asked to be godparents! Mary Della, your loving, kind, sweet, soft-spoken voice and your smile will be missed! Mary Della was very grateful for O.D. looking out and seeing about them when illness came upon both her and Moses. As Chris’ wife Catherine and the doctors, nurses and medical staff would say, Mrs. Mary Della is such a “sweet and strong woman”. Yes, my Mom, Mary Della, a kind, soft-spoken, generous, spiritual strong woman who loved God, loved her family Moses, Linda and Rufus and especially Chris, who she had a close bond. Mary Della, your loving, kind, sweet, soft-spoken voice and your smile will truly be missed!

She was preceded in death by her parents S.T. and Lessie Kindell (Simpson), brothers, J.C. Kindell and Willie Kindell, her husband King Moses and her daughter, Linda L. Holland.

Mary Della Holland passed away on May 2, 2025, at the age of 85. She leaves to cherish her memories; sons Chris Holland (Catherine) and Rufus Holland, brother-in-law O.D. Jr. (Brenda), sisters-in-law Hattie Stanley (Jimmy), Susie Coleman, Pink Daisy Brookes, Lovella Malone and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, family and dear friends.
