Obituary For Mattie Ford
Mattie Ford, 82, of Ft. Mitchell, AL passed on Sunday, August 30, 2026 in Columbus, GA.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. EST on Friday, September 4, 2026 at St. John AME Church with Dr. Isaac Hudson, Pastor, officiating. Burial to follow at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery on Tuesday, September 8, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. EST. Public viewing will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST on Thursday, September 3, 2026 at Taylor Funeral Home.
Mrs. Mattie Lewis Ford departed this life on Sunday, August 30, 2026 at the Columbus Memorial Hospice Center in Columbus, GA. She was surrounded by her husband, son, and loving family.
Mrs. Ford was born on March 24, 1944 to the late Ed and Laura Hunter Lewis. She was the youngest of nine children and had a twin brother, Matthew. All of her siblings preceded her in death: Eddie Lee, James, George, Maggie, Lizzie, Minnie, Juanita, and Matthew.
She attended elementary school at St. Peter Claver, Holy Trinity, AL and continued her education at Mt. Olive High School in Ft. Mitchell, AL. After graduation, she briefly worked in civil service at Ft. Benning, GA before returning home to help care for her parents. Early in life, she confessed Christ as her Lord and Savior and joined St. John AME Church. In 1978, she married the love of her life, Carey. Together they had a precious son, Travis.
For a time, she worked as a kitchen aide at Mt. Olive Elementary School. She also served as a foster parent, sharing the kind of love she had grown up with. Mattie was a loving wife, mother, aunt, and friend. She was quiet, devoted, and always made sure her family was cared for, whether through babysitting, helping at home, or simply being present when needed.
None of us can remember a pastor at St. John AME since the days of Rev. Glass, who didn't find their way to Mattie's table for friend chicken, ham, collard greens, and at Christmas and Thanksgiving, even chitterlings. She was a consummate homemaker and hostess, welcoming friends, family, and everyone into a spotless home filled with wonderful food and fellowship.
Although Mattie has joined her parents and sibling in a heavenly garden, she has not left us bereft. She leaves to carry on her caring ways, traditions, and ideals: her loving spouse, Carey; her devoted son, Travis; her special daughter, Janice Smith (Roderick Sr.); her grandson, Roderick Jr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends who will cherish her memory. Rest now, all is well.
