The clock of time is wound but once and no man has the power to tell just when the hand will stop to tell the day and hour. Oscar Cooper, Jr was the first child born to the late Oscar Cooper, Sr. and Carrie Dell (Eason) Couch. He graduated from South Girard High School in 1969 where he was a star 3rd base, baseball player. Oscar, affectionately known as ‘June Bug’ also played baseball around the community with the Pappa Sprangs’ team. They played teams from the Backroads, Pumpkin Bottom, and LP to name a few. He said, “Everybody wanted to play him”. Later in life, he continued to be involved in the game he loved so much and served as an Empire at Meadowlane Park.
He accepted Christ early in his life and ultimately became a Deacon and Sunday School teacher at Liberty Hill Missionary Baptist Church. Oscar married Arcola Cooper on January 11, 1971 and to this union they had three children; Tyrone Cooper, Tara (Taurus Sr.) Sharp, and Algamond Cooper.
Oscar was employed at Douglas and Lomason and finished his working years in the Dining Hall at Fort Benning. June Bug was a devout Alabama fan but also cheered for Auburn only when his cousin James Joseph, Jr. (Bo Peep) played. He was an avid fisher and rabbit hunter and took pride in caring for his prized hunting dogs Shorty, Daisy, Lil Red, Lil Bit, and Big Gal. He also enjoyed working in the kitchen at Franchise Missionary Baptist Church serving the hungry. His greatest pastime was studying the Bible with his buddies at Phillips Temple CME. They spent countless hours dissecting the Bible.
Dea. Cooper departed this life on May 5, 2026 to enter eternal rest. God saw the road was getting rough and the hills getting harder for him to climb. The weary hours, the days of pain, the sleepless nights are passed. The ever patient worn out frame has found sweet rest at last.
Other than his parents, Oscar is preceded in death by his brothers, Jackie Cooper and Rodney Cooper. Nephews, Derrick and Ron Short.
His memories will forever live on in the hearts of his wife, Arcola Cooper; Children; Tyrone Cooper, Tara (Taurus Sr.) Sharp, and Algamond Cooper. Grandchildren; Tecoya Cooper, Shaquana Cooper, Tyeron Cooper, Cobie Cooper, Ty’Jor Cooper, Taurus Sharp, Jr, and Taraji Sharp.
