Rev. Dr. Lucius Toney, Jr., 87, formerly of Seale, AL, passed away on Monday, September 1, 2025 in Rockville, Maryland.
Service will be held at 9:30 a.m. EST, Friday, September 12, 2025 in the C.T. Chapel of Taylor Funeral Home with Rev. Hovet Dixon, officiating and Rev. Dr. Reginald Booker, eulogist. Burial to follow in the Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell, AL. Public Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. EST, Friday, September 12, 2025 prior to the service.
Rev. Dr. Lucius Toney, Jr. was born on November 8, 1937, in Seale, AL, to the late Bessie Tolbert Davis and the late Lucius Toney, Sr. Rev. Dr. Lucius Toney, Jr., a beloved father, husband, and servant of God, peacefully entered eternal rest on September 1, 2025, at the age of 87, in Rockville, Maryland, surrounded by family.
Lucius began his life of service in the United States Military, where he faithfully served his country for 28 years, retiring with the distinguished rank of Master Sergeant. His career allowed him to travel to many states and countries, experiences he carried with pride and honor.
Faith Journey
Rev. Dr. Toney dedicated his life to Christ at an early age. After his distinguished military career, he answered a higher calling, embracing his true vocation as a minister and later earning the title of Reverend Doctor. His servanthood was a blessing to God’s Kingdom during his tenure at Pleasant Grove AME Zion (Ozark, AL), Johnstown AME Zion (Ramer, AL), New Jerusalem Baptist Church (Lawrenceville, GA), and Refreshing Spring COGIC (Riverdale, Maryland). His life was a testament to his deep faith, servanthood, gentle spirit, and profound love for all people.
Family
He shared his life with his beloved wife of 29 years, the late Theresa Elizabeth Green Toney, and to this union, they were blessed with two sons, Lucius Toney III and Courtland Toney. After Theresa’s passing in 2002, God blessed him again with a devoted wife, Edith Ann Butler, who remained lovingly and faithfully by his side.
Other than his parents and former wife, he is preceded in death by three brothers, Edgar Davis, John Henry Davis, and Will Davis, Jr.
Rev. Dr. Toney’s memories will be forever cherished by his loving family, his devoted wife, Edith Ann Butler; his sons, Lucius Toney, III and Courtland Toney; his brother, Samuel (Dorothy) Davis, and a host of extended family and friends.
Legacy
Rev. Dr. Toney lived a full and beautiful life of service, love, and faith. His kindness, wisdom, and devotion to God will continue to inspire all who knew him. His legacy is one of service, faith, and inspiration to all who knew him. “Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your Lord” – Matthew 25:23.

Rev. Toney and his family were such an inspiration to the Little Zion A.M.E. Zion Church family in Ramer, Alabama during his pastoral appointments with us. We loved them so and hated to see them move on. Know that you all are in our thoughts and prayers during this season you're in.
