Dr. Ann Dozier

Dr. Ann Dozier Turner was a devoted and loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend to all who encountered her. There were so many attributes that Dr. Turner had that remain unmeasured. She was heaven sent.

Dr. Turner was born to Fred Mark Dozier and Merlean Atkinson Dozier in Nashville, Tennessee. Her father, who preceded her in death, through his tent ministry, planted many Church of Christ churches throughout the United States. He was educated from David Lipscomb college, and his most enjoyable moments were when he was spreading the gospel. Dr. Turner absorbed his love for people and continued to carry the torch.

Dr. Turner’s education started at Tennessee State University where she earned a bachelor’s degree. She then went on to obtain two masters degrees from Fisk University, one in Sociology and Psychology, and a doctorate in Gerontology. She was a social worker and a teacher for many years. There were times when she, in her position as a social worker, would give away her own food, work late hours, and use her funds to make sure that her clients had power and water. She also trained and found jobs for patients at Clover Bottom Hospital.

Due to her care for the community, she was appointed by the Governor to be over the Licensure program for The State of Tennessee, which licensed hospitals, Mental health and Alcohol and Drug Abuse facilities. She utilized this position to create generational wealth for those in need.

Dr. Turner was a devoted member of Schrader Lane Church of Christ. She served in the tape ministry, encouraged members, and made many a joyful noise unto the Lord. She served as the President of AARP and was a member of the Honors Society for Fisk University, and was an avid member of the Pearl High School alumni.

As a mother, alongside her late husband Valdo Lacier Turner, she was very caring and supportive. She did her best to expose her only daughter, Valerie Turner Broadway, to music, education, culture, and class. She was known for her vivacity, her fashion, and her caring nature. She was truly a giver.

She lived a long and well-lived life to its fullest. She is deeply loved by her family and her memories and impact will live on through those who are left. She joins in eternal rest with her parents, Fred and Merlean Dozier, her siblings, Robert Dozier and Fred Dozier, her nephews, Andrew Avery and Mickey Avery, and her late husband, Valdo Lacier Turner, who proceeded her in death.

Dr. Ann Dozier Turner was survived by her daughter, Valerie Broadway, son-in-love, Dr. Roderick Broadway, granddaughters, Valacier Broadway Battie with husband and son Michael, Juliet Broadway, and Christina Broadway, Esq., great granddaughter, Devin Jones, sister, Barbara Delores Avery, nephew John Avery and Rodney Dozier, nieces, Ann Sinatra and Fernisa Joy, cousins, other family, and friends.
