Joe Phillip Blackshear
Nov 20, 1944 — Jun 28, 2026
Joseph (Joe) Phillip Blackshear entered the world on November 20, 1944, in Hawkinsville, Georgia, as the third of five children born to the late Sim and Doris Blackshear. He entered into eternal rest on June 28, 2026.
Accepting Jesus Christ at a young age, Joe joined Free Providence Baptist Church in Cochran, Georgia, where he sang in the choir. He was educated in the public schools of Bleckley County, Georgia. Upon completing his education, and in addition to helping on the family farm, Joe worked at the Ophelia Manufacturing Company in Hawkinsville, Georgia.
Musically talented, Joe played the guitar, drums, and organ. He, his brother Allen, and several of their cousins formed a band called The Rocking Blazers. With Joe on the drums, the band entertained fans at music venues throughout Middle Georgia.
Joe united in matrimony with the late Vivian Tharpe, and to that union were born two devoted sons: Danny Dorian and Craig Eugene. With his young family, Joe relocated to Nashville in 1968, where he began working at Ozburn‑Hessey. Joe later happily joined in marriage with Patricia (Pat) Davis, and welcomed with open arms two bonus children, Walter and Bettonya. He continued working in the warehouse industry for many years until his retirement in 2015.
Along with his wife, Pat, Joe was a devoted member of True Way Church, where he enjoyed worshipping and fellowshipping alongside his brothers and sisters in Christ. During service, Joe could often be seen rhythmically tapping his foot to the spirit‑filled and melodious music of the choir. Although his declining health limited his attendance, he remained a faithful and committed member of the True Way Church family.
Affectionately known as “Joe Sappy,” Joe delighted in entertaining his family and friends with cookouts, family game nights, and social gatherings for special occasions, holidays, or simply just because he loved bringing people together. Known for invoking laughter with his joking personality, he was a loyal fan of the Tennessee State University Tigers and Pittsburgh Steelers football teams. Joe especially treasured time spent with the love of his life, Pat, as they traveled to various vacation destinations, making memories that he held dear throughout his life.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Sim and Doris Blackshear; and siblings, Allen, Milton, and Daisey Lee.
The devoted, loving, and loyal members of Joe’s family left to cherish his memory include his wife, Patricia Blackshear; sons, Danny (Lisa) Blackshear, and Craig Blackshear; bonus children, Walter Davis and Bettonya Davis; daughter-in-law, Stephanie Blackshear; sister, Patricia (Thomas) Fisher; brothers-in-law, Douglas (Marsha) Palmer and Jeffery Palmer; grandchildren, Hollin (Tony) Hart, Dorian Blackshear, Jonquise Davis, Daniel D. (Teriyana) Blackshear, Craig Blackshear, Jr., Charity Blackshear, Tattiauna Davis, and Jonas Blackshear; six great grandchildren, and a host of cousins, nephews, nieces, extended family, and friends.
