Celebrating the life of Mamie Hawkins, a beloved matriarch, cherished friend, and devoted community member. She passed away peacefully at her home on June 24, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born November 8, 1950, in Nashville, TN, Mamie was a beacon of light and warmth who enriched the lives of all who knew her. Mamie’s life was a testament to her strength and faith. She leaves behind a legacy of love and service that will be remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Mamie was one of the many spirited children of the late Nannie B. Fite. She professed hope in Christ at an early age. She was baptized under the leadership of Rev. Maxwell at Mt. Herman M.B. Church. Church. She attended public school system in Nashville. For twenty years, Mamie dedicated her professional life to serving others as a medical receptionist at Vanderbilt Medical Center. Her compassion and professionalism made her a beloved figure among colleagues and patients alike. Her commitment to helping others extended beyond her work as she was an active member of True Faith M. B. Church, where she nourished spirits with her solid faith and generosity.
She met and married the late Mr. Phillip H. Hawkins Sr. To this union three children were born; Karen Neal, the late Phillip H. Hawkins Jr., and Christie Hawkins.
She was also preceded in death by her siblings—Janice Cross, Erma Fite, Nannie B. Crutcher, Francis McAfee, Mamie Ward-Wright, Goldie Ursery, Toni Clark, Joe Roach, Henry Fite, Leonard Fite, William Fite, and Donald Hickman. Despite the heartache of loss, Mamie upheld a legacy of resilience and love that continues to thrive through her family.
She is survived by her daughters, Karen Neal and Christie Hawkins; her fiancé Mr. Willie Williams (her Boo); her bonus daughters, Sharon Debardeleben, Phyllis Bradley, Angela Washington, Velva Wilson, Bertha Simmons, and her daughter-in-law, Tiffany Hawkins who each held a special place in her heart. She also leaves behind; sisters Lavenia Jones, Jaqueline Hackney, Mary Brown, and Lolita Fite; and brother Lewis Fite. Mamie’s nurturing spirit lives on through her 9 grandchildren: Katie Nance, Phillip Cunningham, Jannika Cobb, Shaynae Hawkins, Philondria Hawkins, Devonte Hawkins, Jonathan Nightingale, Michael Ferby, and Marquise Ferby and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. She leaves devoted friends: Dannie Mae Lewis, Diane Nelson, Phyllis Jackson, and Debra Jackson; friends; Betty Stewart, Sherri Lee, Gloria Rose, Rochelle Darby, Lenora Yokley and her True Faith M.B. Church Family.
Mamie had an innate gift for hospitality, making everyone she encountered feel welcomed and valued. She was especially known for her kindness and generosity, qualities that touched countless lives. Whether she was helping those in need or cooking for the elderly, Mamie found joy and purpose in serving others, embodying the spirit of community and care.
As we honor Mamie’s life, we remember her not only for her selfless acts and compassionate heart but also for the laughter, love, and memories she shared with all of us. Her legacy of love, resilience, and kindness will continue to inspire and guide her family and friends for generations to come.
