Mr. James Copeland, Sr. was born in Detroit, Michigan on March 20, 1930 to the late Otis and Alzadie Copeland. After cheerfully celebrating his 91st birthday with family, our ‘King James’ peacefully transitioned from the comforts of his own home on March 21, 2021.
James was born to a well-known community family of seven children. At an early age, he married Carrie Mae Bryant. Together, they raised ten children and worshipped as a family at Bethlehem Baptist Church where he last visited on March 7th receiving his last communion in fellowship with other saints.
He served in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve for 10 years and later worked for Norfolk Southern Railroad retiring after a 30-year career. He went above the role of provider by pursuing many entrepreneurial ventures. This allowed him to become a role model and pillar in the community establishing a lasting legacy.
James was preceded in death by his wife, Carrie M. Copeland, sons, James Jr., Wilbur and Alvin Lamar, sister Odessa Sykes and brother Ernest Copeland. We rejoice in their heavenly reunion.
James Copeland leaves behind a devoted family of children: DeLorce Copeland, Clinton Copeland (Voncea), Teressa Lynn Dumas (Thomas), Carol Copeland, Agnes Copeland (Raymond), Barbara Copeland, Alzadie Copeland Grier (Stephen) and 40+ grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Additionally, his siblings Richard Copeland, Exie Avery, Elijah Copeland and Frank Copeland will all miss him dearly along with his beloved in-laws, nieces, nephews, community and church families.
Visitation will be held Friday, April 2nd from 2PM-3:30PM at Bethlehem Baptist Church 200 Bethlehem Church Road Hamilton, GA and at Terry Family Funeral Home located at 145 North College Street Hamilton, GA 31811 from 4PM-6PM. Face coverings are required.
Services will be held Saturday, April 3rd at 1PM in the Cathedral of Hope located at 13377 Hwy 27 Hamilton, GA 31811. The family requests that all attendees please wear facial coverings.
The Copeland Family is appreciative and grateful for your consideration, support and expressions of love during this time. Due to the pandemic, we ask that any in-person greeting at the family home be very limited and done outside weather permitting.
