Annie was born on a crisp spring day, Friday, March 4, 1938, and left this world peacefully on Monday, April 20, 2026. She was a treasured resident of Talladega, Alabama, where she enriched the lives of all who knew her.
Annie's life was filled with her deep love for music and nature. She was a proud member of Kings Chapel Church, where she sang in the choir and attended Sunday school. Her voice added joy and worship. She carried that same spirit to Peace Missionary Baptist Church and Howard Chapel CME Church.
A woman of strength and resilience, Annie graduated from Talladega County Training School in 1957 and dedicated nearly thirty-four years of her life to her work at Crown Textile until the company closed its doors. She was a home healthcare provider as well as an employee of Jack’s restaurant to keep busy.
Her passion for gardening was evident in the vibrant flowers that adorned her home, reflecting her love for beauty, life and decorating. She would walk around her yard and driveway for exercise and sing her favorite hymns. Annie enjoyed traveling to different parts of the country with her family during annual family reunions. She particularly enjoyed spending time with family and friends during social gathering and Christmas clubs. Annie looked forward to watching her favorite game shows and soap operas with no interruptions. Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy and The Young and Restless were her favorites. Daily phone calls with family and friends made her happy.
She married the late Fred Dates, Jr. and they leave behind a legacy of love and family. She is survived by her devoted children: Teresa A. Morris of Talladega, AL, Sandra D. (Stephen) Allen, Jr. of Medford, NY, Cynthia (Lamar) Westbrook of Anniston, AL, Charlene Dates Avery of Talladega, AL, and Gregory S. (Felicia) Dates of Middle Island, NY. Her familial ties extend to twelve grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren who brought her the most joy. Annie is also mourned by her cherished sister, Freddie Mae (James) Green of Talladega, AL, and her brother, Otha (the late Christine) Calhoun of Maryland, D.C.
Annie was the cherished daughter of the late Mell K. Calhoun and Eliza Calhoun. She was predeceased by her dear son, Marvin Gaye Dates, and her beloved siblings, Mildred Wheeler, Christine Hatchett, Catherine Melton, Mercedes Calhoun, Ruthie Bell Calhoun, Melvin Calhoun, and Earmon Calhoun.
While we mourn her loss, we celebrate the full and vibrant life she led, one filled with love, resilience, and grace. Her gentle spirit and enduring love will remain in the hearts of all who knew her.
