Mr. Benjamin Tanner, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother, transitioned peacefully on Tuesday, May 19, 2026 at the age of 72. Born on June 3, 1953 to the late Jessie Mae Tanner and the late Fred Tanner. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Joanne Benjamin, Deborah Hardy, and Beverly Gaines.
Benjamin graduated from Talladega High School in 1971. Embarking thereafter on a long and fulfilling career as a laborer with Tyson Foods. His strong work ethic and dedication were a true testament to his character. Benjamin was a passionate sports fan, of which his favorite team was Alabama.
He is survived by his wife Sheryl Cunningham of Birmingham, AL; his loving children, Shonkia Brown Whitson of Talladega, Bentoya Curry of Washington D.C., and Jamario Pointer (Katrina Johnson) of Talladega.
Benjamin was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren: Jamarrius Pointer, Justasia Pointer, Jamario Pointer Jr., Germani Pointer, Maliki Curry, Ra’Niya Brown, and Delveccehio Whitson Jr.; and one great-grandchild, JaNiyla Twyman.
He also leaves to cherish his memory four sisters: Carrie Brown, Freddie Morris, Gloria Tanner-Beavers, and Nevada Jemison, all of Talladega; one brother, Fredrick Tanner of Talladega; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
His enduring legacy of love, strength, and dedication will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him and cherished him.
