Joe was born on a warm Saturday, August 15th, 1964, in Talladega, Alabama, to his proud parents, Manuel and Bettye Lou Shirel.
Joe was a man of deep faith and community involvement. As the Assistant Minister of Kelly Springs Missionary Baptist Church, he shared his spiritual wisdom generously. He also served as the President of the Men of Integrity and touched many lives as a Sunday school teacher.
A proud graduate of Talladega High School, Joe dedicated much of his working life to the Anniston Army Depot, before retiring from notable places such as Honda, Masterbrand Cabinets, and Tyson Foods. His professional journey was marked by hard work and excellence.
Beyond his work and faith, Joe was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, and spending quality time with his family. He was also a sports enthusiast who cheered passionately for his favorite teams.
Joe leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication through his cherished family. He is survived by his loving, devoted wife, Debra Ann Shirel; his sons, Joe (Breana) Evans of Lincoln, AL, Justin (Tara) Evans of Jacksonville, AL and Jeremy (Kenya) Shirel of Midland, GA. His memory will live on in the hearts of his nine grandchildren who adored their grandfather dearly. Joe is also survived by his siblings, Carol Moten, Michael (Cynthia) Shirel, Rodney Shirel, and Mark (Sheletia) Shirel; as well as his sisters-in-law, Tongule (Brinkley) Smoot, Angela (William) Beavers, Cassandra Evans, Sharon Jones and LaRuth Jones; brother-in-law, Donnell (Cheree) Jones; along with his beloved aunts, Mary Moten, Lezell McGhee and Kattie Moten. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and countless friends also mourn his loss.
Joe passed away on Sunday, June 7th, 2026, at the age of 61. He was predeceased by his parents, Manuel and Bettye Lou Shirel, as well as his dear sisters, Sharon Cross and Clara Shirel Swain. Their reunion in the heavens above gives comfort to those of us left behind.
