John Elbert Duncan was born on October 9, 1953, to Mr. Willie Lee and Catherine Harmon in Talladega, Alabama. John transitioned from this life to a peaceful rest on the evening of August 21, 2025 at Jackson Hospital in Montgomery Alabama. He joined New Maryland Missionary Baptist Church at an early age but later fellowshipped with other churches.
John pursued his early education at Phillis Wheatley High School, where he established a foundation for a lifetime of learning and service. Continuing his studies, he attended Allied University and subsequently honed his expertise in plumbing at Jennings Construction for Plumbing.
John joined the U.S. Marine Corp on 29 September 1975. He was a Sharpshooter as a Marine. When he departed the Marines on March 31, 1978, he could not change his walk, his talk nor his work ethics. As a proud Marine, his scars were worn on the inside in silence. Once a Marine always a Marine. “Semper Fidelis”
He was a father, son, brother, uncle and friend to many. Family was always a priority for John. John would take care of veterans, friends and neighbors before taking care of himself. Stubborn is putting it lightly. Trying to make him sit down and slowdown was a task in itself.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Catherine Harmon; maternal grandparents, Luther and Nadie Duncan, Sr. and Hardy and Solonia Reynolds, Sr.; paternal grandparents, Willie Garrett and Mary Chatman; his brother, Dwight Harmon; as well as many aunts and uncles.
He is survived by his children, Kobi (Elizabeth) Chatman and Seckorie (Shinekio) Chatman; grandchildren, Nigel, Ethan, Kayden, Makayla and Mallory Chatman; sisters, Willie Ann Jackson of Alpine, AL and Nadine Ballard (Billy) of Ashland, AL; brothers, Michael Harmon (Annie) of Winterboro, AL, Oscar Harmon of Anniston, AL and Richard Harmon (Mary Ann) of Talladega, AL. John has a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
