John Louis Chatman was born on Sunday, April 25, 1948, to the late Aremester and Bettie Chatman.
A man of strong faith, John was a quiet yet formidable warrior through life's battles, embodying a spirit of perseverance and steadfastness. His love for God and family was evident to everyone who knew him. He was a member of Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church.
John was educated in the Talladega County School System, which laid the foundation for a lifetime of learning and exploration. John was a dedicated laborer at Georgia-Pacific, where he spent many fulfilling years contributing his skills and expertise. Known for his love of all things mechanical, John was a gifted jack of all trades—whether it was working on automobiles, tractors, or anything with a motor, he found joy in repairing and creating. His talents in mechanics, carpentry, masonry, and plumbing were matched only by his willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
“Ham”, as he was affectionately known, is survived by his devoted wife, Doris Yvonne Chatman; his cherished daughter, Donica (Christopher) Knuckles of Atlanta, GA; his loving sons, Antonio Daniels, Jairon Barclay, and Bernard Williams, all of Talladega, AL; and his treasured two grandchildren. He will also be fondly remembered by his sisters, Ethel Austin, Fannie Simmons, Annie Pearl Jenkins, and Rita Faye Chatman, all residing in Talladega; and his brother, Levi (Claudine) Chatman, also of Talladega. He leaves behind a large, loving family including a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and numerous other relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.
John Louis Chatman passed away on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at the age of 78. John was preceded in death by his parents, Aremester and Bettie Chatman; his sisters, Mary Elizabeth Chatman and Vera Sue Chatman; and his brother, Walter Lee Chatman.
His spirit and legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known him. John's life was defined by his humility, generosity, and the unwavering bonds of family. May he rest in eternal peace.
