Born on Monday, February 25, 1957, in Ashland, AL, to Willie James Buchanan and Margaret Cunningham Buchanan, Larry spent his formative years in the rolling hills of Clay County.
A proud alumnus of Clay County High School, Larry went on to serve his country with distinction in the United States Army. Following his military service, Larry dedicated his career to Northrop Grumman Corporation, where he worked as a laborer before retiring from his role in Shipping and Receiving.
Known for his comedic spirit, Larry found joy in spending time with family and friends. Whether casting a line or simply dreaming of the next fishing adventure, Larry's love for fishing was well-known. His laughter and stories will live on in the hearts of those who loved and admired him.
“Buck” as he was affectionately known, is survived by his devoted wife, Nellie Bell Buchanan, of Huntsville, AL, who journeyed with him through life for forty-seven years. He leaves behind a legacy in his children: Monica Buchanan, Swayla Buchanan, Larry Joe Buchanan, Jr. and Joe Buchanan, all residing in Huntsville, AL. His memory will also be carried on by his beloved grandchildren, Naima, Jayvontae, Christoffer, Zarayah, Corey and Jeremiah Buchanan, as well as his great-grandchild, Navaughna Johnson.
Larry's siblings, Bonita (James) Meadows of Munford, AL, and Richard Buchanan of Lineville, AL, hold dear the many memories and moments shared. He is fondly remembered by a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and countless friends whose lives he touched with his infectious humor and warm smile.
Larry Joe “Buck” Buchanan, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend, departed this life on Sunday, May 18, 2025, at the age of 68. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Willie James and Margaret Buchanan; his sisters, Mary Helen Bishop, Jacqueline Buchanan and Patricia Buchanan; and his brother, Willie James “Billy” Buchanan, Jr.
As we say goodbye to our beloved “Buck”, may we remember him with love and gratitude for all the ways he enriched our world. May he rest in eternal peace.
Thinking of you in these difficult times.
My deepest condolences family. I love you all and will always cherish our memories of being y'all neighbor and friend in Huntsville. "Dad" was always very welcoming as he and Ms. Nellie treated me just as their own. Ma, Swayla, Monica, Boo and Joe & the children y'all are in my prayers. I know that death leaves a sting that we can never quite prepare for. A great man, be a great legacy.
