Obituary For Mary Olivia "Mae Mae" Fomby

A celebration of life for Ms. Mary Olivia "Mae Mae" Fomby, 80, will be 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Reverend Joseph S. Rowser will deliver the eulogy. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation for Ms. Fomby will be Monday, May 31, 2021, from 1-6 p.m. at the funeral home and on Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at the church.

MARY OLIVIA FOMBY, 80, of Lincoln, Alabama passed away Tuesday, May 25, 2021 peacefully at The Village of Cook Springs with her family by her side. Mary Olivia Fomby affectionately known as “Mae Mae” was born April 12, 1941 in Lincoln, AL to the late Milledge Fomby and Vera Mae “Lady” (Curry) Fomby-Jelks and step-daughter of Jessie J. Jelks. Mae Mae graduated from Talladega County Training School in 1959. A resident of Lincoln, she gave her life to God in childhood and was a life-long member of Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church.

Everyone that knew Mae Mae knew the love and pride she felt for her girls, Stacey and Dee. As the girls grew, Mae Mae had funny stories about them at every stage of their lives. During holidays and family gatherings, Mae Mae laughed and shook her head at extended family. She liked to reminisce and tell stories including the one where she was able to put her feet in the Atlantic Ocean on Sullivan’s Island during a family trip to Charleston, SC. She had a sharp memory and quick wit that sometimes made her say “Stop it Mae Mae or Don’t say that Mae Mae”.

Although legally blind early in life, Mae Mae saw everything; she loved shopping especially from her Roamans and Fingerhut catalogs. You could always find her completing a word puzzle, watching her soaps, and The Price is Right while chatting on the phone with Alonzo and closest friend and cousin, Deanna. It is well known, even as an adult, that Stacey would not take meetings during The Price is Right so that she and Mae Mae could discuss the daily winners.

Mae Mae kept her Goddaughter, Stacey, from infancy and took an active role in raising her. She was there for every moment, big and small, of her life just as Stacey was there for the last moments of Mae Mae’s time here with us. Mae Mae also took care of her cousin and Goddaughter, DeAndra “Dee” growing-up; and as years passed, Dee helped take care of Mae Mae.

Mae Mae is survived by a host of friends and relatives: One sister, Juanita Weed Naill of Anniston, AL; Goddaughters, Stacey Hill of Phoenix, AZ and DeAndra Elston of Lincoln, AL; Godbrother and Godsister, Alonzo and Sherneverlyne Hill of Lincoln, AL; and a host of Godchildren: Stephanie “Tan” Hill Alexander of Birmingham, AL; Tonja (Stacey Aaramus, husband; Stacey Amir, son) Alexander-Hollis of Greenbelt, Maryland; Thomas Alexander, IV of Gainesville, FL; Lawanda (Dwight) Elston of Lincoln, AL. Cousins: Deanna (Henry) Weed of Lincoln, AL; Gloria (Bobby) Lynch of Lincoln, AL; Willie Emma (Gerald) Simmons of Oklahoma; Bonnie Ruth (Edward) Vincent of Gadsden, AL; Florence Curry Lemon of California; Brenda (Andrew) Woods of Eastaboga, AL. Closest Friend: Amanda Lee Sims (Nathaniel) Portee of New Jersey; Along with a host of several relatives, friends, and Church family.
