Obituary For Mattie Louise Swain Jones
Mattie Louise Swain Jones was born on Friday, January 13th, 1939 in Talladega, Alabama to Lee Wesley Swain and Mary Kelly Swain.
Mattie's life was a testament to love, service, and dedication. A proud graduate of Phillis Wheatley High School in Childersburg, AL, she pursued a fulfilling career with ATAP, Inc. (formerly Quality Manufacturing) before retiring. Prior to her career at ATAP, she was a Dorm Parent at the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind, touching countless lives with her compassionate spirit.
Her devotion extended beyond her professional life into her community commitments. Mattie was an active member of the Usher Board, the Kitchen Staff, and the Women Voices Choi at St. Campbell Missionary Baptist Church. She also served with honor in the Laurel Chapter 108 of the Order of Eastern Star, offering her time and talents for the benefit of others.
A cherished mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Mattie leaves behind a loving family to cherish her memory. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Dorothy (Eric) Johnson of Talladega, AL; her treasured grandchildren, Tiarra Calhoun, Cecil Rashad Chappell, and Isaac Chappell; and her precious great-grandchildren, Zamir Calhoun, Zaire Calhoun, Zade Calhoun, Micah Chappell, and Micylah Chappell. She is also survived by her devoted sisters, Jill Swain of Akron, OH and Mildred (John) Ragland of Alpine, AL; her brother, Lee Roy (Annie Lois) Swain of Alpine, AL; her brother-in-law, Joe Garrett of Alpine, AL; her sister-in-law, LaCheryle Swain of Alpine, AL; and a host of bonus children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends who will continue to honor her legacy of kindness and generosity.
Mattie departed this world peacefully on Sunday, June 15th, 2025. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lee Wesley Swain and Mary Swain; her son, Luke Swain; her sisters, Mary M. Garrett, Mary Etta Garrett, and Rosie Swain; and her brothers, Leamon Swain, Lee Wesley Swain, Jr., Hosie Swain, Jack Swain, Dudley Swain, and Eddie Swain.
May her soul rest in eternal peace.
