Milton Dewey Harmon Sr., a dedicated educator and beloved family man, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 8th, 2025. Born on Monday, July 2nd, 1945, Milton spent 79 vibrant years committed to his passions and cherishing his loved ones.
A lifelong resident of Talladega, Alabama, Milton graduated from Westside High School in 1964. He furthered his education at Talladega College, earning his degree in 1970. Always eager to expand his knowledge, Milton attended the University of Montevallo, the University of Alabama, and Gallaudet University, ultimately obtaining his Education Specialist (EDS) degree from Jacksonville State University.
Milton found purpose in teaching, sharing his gifts with students at the Alabama Industries for the Deaf and Blind as a math and special education teacher. This role combined his love for academia with his passion for helping young minds grow. Beyond his professional achievements, he proudly served as a Deacon at Mt. Cleveland Missionary Baptist Church arriving at the intersection of faith, community, and dedication.
In his leisure time, Milton was an avid outdoorsman. Whether fishing, hunting, or tinkering away in his shed, Milton crafted a life interwoven with a love for nature and creativity.
Milton is survived by his devoted wife, Wanda Harmon of Talladega, AL; his loving children: his daughter, Sophia Harmon and his son Michael (Rachel) Harmon, both of Talladega, AL. He leaves behind a legacy of eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, all of whom will lovingly remember him. Additionally, he is survived by his siblings: his sister, Theresa (Alvin) Vincent of Talladega, AL, and his brothers, Sebron Lewis Harmon, Jr. of Talladega, AL and Archie B. (Gloria) Harmon of Tampa, FL.
Milton is preceded in death by his son, Milton D. Harmon, Jr.; and his parents, Sebron Lewis Harmon, Sr. and Naomi Harmon, who undoubtedly helped shape him into the man he ultimately became.
Family and friends will find solace in the cherished memories Milton leaves behind. In this time of mourning, we celebrate the life of Milton Dewey Harmon Sr.—a teacher, a father, a grandfather, a brother, and cherished husband who lived his life passionately devoted to family, education, and community.
In Lieu of flowers, the family respectfully request that they be sent to Talladega Healthcare Center.
I had the distinct pleasure of being a next-door neighbor to the Harmon family, for eleven years, while living in Talladega in 1959-1971. Milton was only fourteen years old when I first came to know him, but we became fast friends as he would sometimes run errands for me to earn small pocket change. I am very proud that he grew up to be such a successful young man and successful educator. May God's grace continue to engulf the Harmon family in the absence of their beloved relative, and my former friend, Milton Harmon. Blessings to all. Charlie "Chuck" Varner, Jr. Montgomery, Alabama
My sympathy to the Harmon family. My father was Milton's mother brother. I remember Milton as the nice cousin who visited our grandparents in the sixties. He was an angel on earth as he is in heaven
