Vera Dell Jones Fomby began her earthly journey on August 27, 1944, in Alpine, Alabama to the union of Anthony Jones, Sr. and Ever Green Garrett Jones.
Mrs. Fomby dedicated her life to Christ at an early age and united with Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. After uniting in holy matrimony to Henry Pearl Fomby on December 11, 1965, Vera moved her membership to St. Campbell Missionary Baptist Church where she served as president of the usher board. Vera was educated in the schools of Talladega County and went on to be employed during her lifetime with Bemiston Mill, Tyson Foods and Merryweather Foam, Inc. as well as becoming a caregiver to help others in need.
Anyone who knew Vera knew that she was always a very fashionable woman that served up a heaping helping of beauty. She always enjoyed staying on the go whether it be for the purpose of shopping or being the “Passenger Princess” that she was. As the matriarch of the family, it was important to her to maintain a strong cohesive unit which could be accomplished by opening her doors to entertain her family and preparing delicious meals to serve everyone especially the show stopping dressing she was known for.
Vera was the loving mother to Marilyn (Benjamin) Lawson of Alpine, Alabama, JoAnn (Robert) Jenkins of Talladega, Alabama, Olivia Jones Lee of Childersburg, Alabama, Henry A. (Bonita) Fomby of Alpine, Alabama Arlesia Oden of Alpine, Alabama and Bridget (Dion) Lawler of Duluth, Georgia; nurturing grandmother to twenty-two grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren; devoted sister of Reverend Robert L. Jones, Sr. of Rockford, Illinois; sister-in-law to Gertrude Zachery of Talladega, Joan Ford of Alpine, Alabama, Blanch (Jeff) Curry of Oxford, Alabama, Harry L. Fomby of Detroit, Michigan, Minnie Lee Jones of Alpine, Alabama, Patricia A. Jones of Munford, Alabama, Annie P. Swain of Alpine, Alabama and Paula Jones of Decatur, Alabama; and will be remembered fondly by a host of other relatives and friends.
On Saturday, February 17, 2024, the Lord completed her earthly journey at Grandview Medical Center. She was preceded in passing by her husband, Henry P. Fomby; her parents, Anthony and Ever Green Jones; five brothers, Anthony Jones, Jr., Corneilus Jones, Sr., Alvin Jones, Jasper Swain and Mack Borden; two grandchildren, Kavaris Oden and Baby Lawler; and one great-great grandchild, Baby Karsen Johnson.
