Obituary For Reverend Sammie Kay Chatman

Homegoing service for Reverend Sammie Kay Chatman of Talladega, 77, will be 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 15, 2022, at Terry's Mortuary Chapel. Reverend Van T. Welch will deliver the eulogy. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation for Reverend Chatman will be 1-7 p.m. on Friday, January 14, 2022, at the funeral home.

In Talladega, Alabama on Saturday, May 22, 1944, Lizzie Mae Terrell Chatman welcomed her only son to her family and named him Sammie Kay. Mr. Chatman dedicated his life to Christ and made Peace Missionary Baptist Church his place of worship. In 1992, he completed the Christian Theology School and served as an assistant pastor at Peace. He not only believed in serving in his church, but also serving his community. Sammie K. completed his education at Westside High School. He enlisted in the United States Army and on October 4, 1971, Sammie was honorably discharged and during his time of service he earned a Purple Heart. Additionally, he retired from Alabama Power Company after 33 years of service. On the morning of January 11, 2022, He said to Reverend Chatman, “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise.” (Luke 23:43) He was preceded on the road to eternity by his mother, Lizzie Mae Chatman; four sisters, Mary Louise Thomas, Georgia Thomas, Marion Hewitt and Helen Moore; one daughter, Lora Ann Merritt; and one daughter-in-law, Portia Merritt.

Sammie Kay’s memories will remain in the heart of his wife of 52 years, Martha Jane Chatman of Talladega, Alabama; three sons, Ricky Chatman, Reggie (Sharrica) Chatman and James Merritt of Talladega, Alabama; one daughter, Joyce (Wayne) Shears of Talladega, Alabama; twelve grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Ann Chatman and Linda Cook of Talladega, Alabama; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
