Born on a crisp autumn Saturday, October 25th, 1930, Thelma brought joy and warmth to her parents, Otis and Willie L. Murray.
Thelma devoted much of her life to her family and her work touching countless lives with her warm spirit and unwavering dedication.
Her steadfast commitment to her profession was paralleled by her active involvement in several church and community organizations. She was a member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church where she served with distinction as a Deaconess, President of the Senior Usher Board, and as a member of the United Usher Board. Her service also extended to the kitchen as President of the Culinary Committee, where her organizational skills and culinary talents were appreciated by all. Thelma was also a respected member of Clayton Pearson Assembly 202 of the Golden Circle and Slaughter Delight Chapter 782 of the Order of Eastern Star.
Thelma Handley passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 26th, 2026, at the age of 95. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, James Handley; her parents, Otis C. Murray and Willie L. Murray; her daughter Thelma LeaVonia Morris; her sisters, Mary E. Burt and Mae Murray; her brothers, Otis Murray, Jr., Darnell P. Murray, Roosevelt Murray and David S. Murray; and a cherished great-grandson, Charles R. Woods.
She is survived by a loving family who will continue to honor her legacy: her sister, Doris A. Murray Lewis of Birmingham, AL; her brother, Larry J. (Jeanette) Murray of Chicago, IL; two granddaughters, Sonya W. (Rev. Jerrell C.) Hicks of Talladega, AL and Santina F. Grant of Anniston, AL; her grandson, Kareem J. Morris; along with six great-grandchildren, twenty great-great-grandchildren, and one precious great-great-great-grandchild. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends also celebrate her remarkable life.
In her 95 years, Thelma Handley created a legacy of love, service, and faith that will continue to inspire her family and community for generations to come. She will be profoundly missed but lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
