Annie Mae (Young) Dunn, affectionately known as “Ann,” “Aunt Ann,” and “Mae Bell” was born April 12, 1945, in the Beaver Dam Community of Rockingham, NC, to the late Freddie L. C. and Lena (Ledbetter) Young.
Ann’s early education was completed at Mineral Springs High School in Ellerbe, NC, and she later attended Pace University at the New York City campus.
Ann’s early Christian journey began in the Mt. Zion United Church of Christ in her hometown community. She later joined the Wayside Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York, where she served as a faithful member and church secretary.
In 2006, she and her husband, Jesse, moved to Fuquay Varina, NC, where they became members of New Providence Missionary Baptist Church. She enjoyed working in the Missions Ministry where she served as Treasurer until she became ill.
Ann met her future husband, Jesse J. Dunn, in a Brooklyn, New York, movie theatre where they became a couple forever. They were married on May 25, 1967.
Ann’s working career began with American Telephone & Telegraph Company. After the divestiture of AT&T, she joined the New York Telephone Company. She began as a clerk and worked her way into management as a Human Resource Manager for disabled personnel. Her career with the companies spanned over 30 years until her retirement.
Approximately in 2015, Ann’s cognitive abilities began to decline. The journey through dementia and Alzheimer’s was not easy, but Ann faced it with courage and resilience, surrounded by the love and care of her family. We will always remember Ann for her unwavering love of life, her gentle spirit, and the way she made the children feel special. Although Ann is no longer with us, the love she gave will never fade.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her loving husband, Jesse; honorary daughter, Anise Porter; sisters, Doris Ellerbe and Frances (Carl) Hagins; brother, Freddie (Millie) Young II; sister-in-law: Joan Dunn; brother-in-law: Nathaniel Pretty; three nieces, seven nephews, great-nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives.
