Obituary For Carrie Lillie Prince Lockley

A Century Of Love

On August 24, 1923, the late Lamie Prince and Mary Lillie Minter Prince celebrated the birth of their daughter, Carrie Lillie Prince, born in Holly Springs, North Carolina. They recognized that there was something “special” about her. As a child, Carrie realized the importance of family, love and giving of herself to others.

At an early age, Carrie Lillie, as she was called, joined Holly Springs United Church of Christ. She was an active member of the Usher Board, Senior Choir and Gospel Chorus until she moved her membership to Apex First Baptist to be with her daughters and their families. She was a member of Jepthas Daughter 623, OES, PHA, Golden Age Ministry, of Juniper Level Missionary Baptist Church and the Senior Ministry, of White Oak Baptist Church.

Mrs. Carrie Lillie was an entrepreneur during the seventies and eighties selling ice cream and cookies from her home. She was the most creative and amazing cook.

She was employed by Raleigh Linen Service, Cary Town Center, Lufkin and Atwater Rest Home. She also worked alongside her husband on the tobacco farm.

Mrs. Carrie Lillie has always been someone you could depend on when it came to caregiving. She cared for several family members. This included her father, step-mother, husband, her children and grandchildren. She traveled many places just to care for her children. Her caring nature sent her places like, Alaska, Baltimore, California, Texas, and Michigan, just to name a few.

Mrs. Carrie Lillie was always willing to give a helping hand to anyone in need. She would pick-up sweet potatoes remaining in the fields after the harvest, with help from her husband and grandchildren. She rode throughout the community in her little red truck with sweet potatoes filled to the top and never taking a dime from anyone when they offered.

Mrs. Carrie Lillie was always on the go when there where a funeral in the surrounding area. It never matter if she knew them or not, she was going to be there. For some reason people would save her a seat because they knew she was coming. She was known as the “Funeral Lady”.

Mrs. Carrie Lillie was always seen outside working in her yard. She could grow anything, even if it seemed to be on its last leg, she could bring it back to life. Yes, she had a green thumb, growing beautiful flowers and vegetables.

You would never catch Mrs. Carrie Lillie without a hat on her head. She loved to always look good when she stepped out. Her favorite bible verse is the 23 Psalm and she would always asked if you knew it, then would start to recite it.

On August 26, 2023, Mrs. Carrie Lillie was presented with a plaque from Mayor Jacques K. Gilbert, Town of Apex, North Carolina, for Celebrating 100 years of Life and Love to her community.

She was the sole survivor of her family. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Beulah Mae Prince and Adarine Dennis, her son, Robert Frank Lockley, 2 grandsons, John Nicholson and Andre Lockley.

Mrs. Carrie Lillie was married to the late Clyde Odell Lockley. She leaves a loving family; two sons, William L. Lockley (Vera) of Ypsilanti, Michigan, Clyde B. Lockley (Priscilla), Apex, North Carolina; seven daughters, Catherine L. Gilchrist of Baltimore, Maryland, Reva L. Garrison (Lealon), Deborah L. Beckwith (Furman), Carrie L.
