Ernestine Street, daughter of Hilbert McLean Sr., and Bertha McLean, was born April 30, 1940, in Raleigh, North Carolina. She departed this world on Friday, February 13, 2026, at her home in Rural Hall, North Carolina.
Ernestine began her education at Holly Spring Elementary School and then at Fuquay Consolildated High School, Class of 1959. After graduation, she worked for three years before entering Barber-Scotia College, where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in General Science/Math and Family & Consumer Science. She furthered her studies at North Carolina A&T University, and Wake Forest University in Continuing Adult education and Family & Consumer Science.
Ernestine was an educator for 37 years with the majority of her tenure within the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system. She was active within her community, being a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Barber-Scotia College alumni, Fuquay-Varina Consolidated High School alumni, and National Alliance of Black School Educators (Retired). After retirement, Ernestine started a small sewing and embroidery business with her friend, the late Mrs. Anne Jackson. This allowed her to continue passion projects with sewing and adding an embroidered special touch to each item. Her gifts allowed so many of her family and friends to look and feel special.
Ernestine was the beloved wife of the late Raymond C. Street. Ernestine leaves two loving daughters, Darian Street-Hoover (Michael) and Stephanie Street; three grandchildren, Stacia Armontie, Garry Michael and Sirr Jordan Carl Hoover; one great - grandson, Kawuan Cox Jr., two brothers, Malone McLean (Gloria) and Wilbert McLean (Ernestine); two sister, Alease McLean and Clarese Howard; sisters-in-law, Rebecca McLean and Nannie Mae McLean; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. She will be missed by close friends, Vanessa Gist, Mary Berry, and Barbara Gray, and all her friends whom she shared laughs, tears and love with throughout the years. Lastly, she will be missed by all the students she has taught over the years. She enjoyed seeing all former students who became successful and continued to love to sew and to cook.
