Johnny Vicente Mawyin, was born July 5, 1966, to Antonio and Magdalena Mawyin in Guayaquil, Ecuador. He passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 28, 2025. He was the first of two children and their only son. The young family moved to Long Island City, NY in 1971 to await the birth of his little sister Maria. He attended St. Patrick Elementary school, graduated from Long Island City High School and attended Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, NJ.
Born into a family of soccer legends, Johnny learned to play the "Family Business." All the cousins played phenomenally. He was an exceptional gymnast in high school, competing in many tournaments including the Big Apple Games. However, his true passion was baseball. He started his 'career' at Elmjack Little League, played for the NY Tigers in high school and earned an athletic scholarship to play for FDU's Knights. This switch hitter could pitch 85-90 miles per hour with either arm, something unheard of at the time.
He hung up his bat and glove to pursue a career in sales that spanned over 40 years. It started with an ad for a summer job selling Kirby's door-to-door after Freshmen year. We are certain he dressed his best, looking sharp in a suit and tie. Cousins recall, "When we were little, he wanted to wear a shirt and tie everywhere... even to play in the park. He always wanted to look sharp." Everyone called him "Corbata brava." He was a natural like everything else he attempted. "The customer is always right" he'd say. Their "We Are Positive!" motto was so representative of his outlook on life. Eventually, Kirby drew him to North Carolina in the late 1990's where he met the woman he would fall in love with, build a life and family with.
As a teen, his dad taught him to shoot pool. The sound of a satisfying good break would echo in every home he moved to. Sooner or later, he would build what we now know as "Johnny M.'s Blue Room." Johnny belonged to a vast community of pool players at Breaktime Billiards. He played and watched until the very end...something that his son inherited an innate talent for.
Johnny is survived by his wife Channel Mawyin, children Mariah Mawyin (Michael), Justin and Dominick, his grandson Marcellus Blaney all of Holly Springs, NC, his parents Antonio and Magdalena Mawyin, sister Maria Mawyin, her children Jazmin Mawyin, Adia Vail and Joshua Vail all of Fresh Meadows, NY. He also leaves to cherish his memory his beloved mother-in-law, Carolyn Garrick (Leroy); sisters-in-law, Jessica Lewis (Willie) and Sally Bethea; nephews, Josh Richardson and Kenny Washington; nieces, Ebony Coleman and Jasmine Richardson, all of Columbia, South Carolina; his godmother, Sharon Winston of Durham, North Carolina; his aunt-mother, Sally White of Tampa, Florida; and his aunt-mother, Elousie Bracey (Alvin) of Raleigh, North Carolina, along with a host of other relatives and friends who will forever treasure his memory.
Johnny lived for his family, beamed with pride over his children and grandchild. Everyone that knew Johnny knew he was a die-hard New York Mets fan. He tuned the entire world OUT to tune INTO the game. In true Johnny style, he tuned out one last time just as they were eliminated

Johnny M as we all used to call him was the first "New Yorker" I ever met. The attitude, the hustle and the colorful language that I had seen in movies featuring NYC natives was all personified in John. He was fun to be around and a truly genuine person. Beneath the foul language and the bluff exterior was a decent, hardworking human being and a loving family man. Sorry to see him gone too soon. Hope the Mawyin family finds grace and strength in this tough time.
To my cousin & Kids I'm so sorry for your loss and pray that. God wrap his loving arms around yall and give you peace and comfort in this time sorrow..I love yall pray for peace and comfort..RIP Johnny you will be missed

My fondest memories of John will always be on the baseball field. The good-natured banter in the dugout and the smile on his face as he was ready to make the play from first will always be the way I remember him. I will miss you, my friend.
To the Mawyin Family. Please accept our deepest condolences. Johnny lived a full life and didn't allow anything to stop him achieving his goals. His hustle was real and I admired his major moves. Sleep well Brother.
Sorry for your loss he was a great guy.
I had the good pleasure of working with John for many years and even enjoyed a few Caribbean trips that we won through work. John was a connoisseur of good steak and I enjoyed learning from him. He motivated our team to excel in sales as we learned from his example. John obviously loved his family and I know he will be sorely missed. Rest in Peace as we will see you again soon as children of the Father and believers in Jesus Christ who is the resurrection and the life.
Our staff will continue to keep your family in our prayers. We thank you for allowing us to serve your family.
