Mary was born on September 17, 1947 in Kipling, North Carolina to the late Edward and Esther Matthews. She was a loving caretaker in the Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, area where she cared for hundreds of children in her daycare center and home daycare for nearly 30 years. She provided transportation to Wake County Public School System, where she worked as a teacher assistant. She also spent time working at IBM and Northern Telecom.
Mary was a faithful member of the Bazzel Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Fuquay-Varina, where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, and served as a leader in the youth department as her children grew up. She was also a songstress in the Wake County area where she would often sing for various services, celebrations, funerals, and weddings.
She leaves behind her loving husband, Jimmy Evans, Jr., along with their three sons, Jimmy Darrell Evans, Matthew Oscar Evans, and Michael Alexander Evans, along with his wife, Julie Evans. She has three grandchildren, Darell Evans, Camden Evans, and Noelle Evans. Her siblings are Ella Mae Stewart and her late husband, Norman Stewart; Edward Matthews and his wife, Linda Matthews; the late Doris Jean Elliott and her late husband, Clifton Elliott; Joyce Caudle and her late husband, Daniel Caudle; Louellen Jones and her husband Travis Jones; and Janice Norris and her late husband Randolph Norris. She also had a host of nieces, nephews, and close family friends that she held closely to her heart.

To the Matthews/Evans family. As you mourn the passing of your love one, just know that we are mourning with you and our thoughts and prayers are with you as you are going through this difficult time. I have known Mary for years now and she was always the same anytime we came in contact with one another. This is really truly hard to accept and I constantly tell myself that she's in a better place, for to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Mary fought a good fight, she finished her course, and she kept the faith. Rest in heavenly peace my friend. Love to the family, Clarese McLean Howard
