I am so saddened to hear of Coach Heggie’s passing. He coached my daughter Gabby when she was in the 4th grade and she loved Coach so much. He was so patient and kind and so pure and sincere with his love for his players. There should definitely be more Coach Heggie’s in the world. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. Thank you for allowing Coach to be in our lives.

I will always remember Melvin, my classmate at Fuquay Consolidated High School. I remember a person who always had a smile and a quiet presence. Seems like nothing upset him during school on the play ground, in the halls, changing classes, Melvin was always the same. He was very funny and liked to keep the atmosphere cool and calm. I saw a different side of Melvin years after graduation.I believe that cool and calm presence came from his relationship with God. I thank God for Melvin and all of his family and I thank God for his presence in my life. Brenda Womble Garrett Classmate 1965
To Patricia & entire Heggie family I am so sorry to hear of Melvin passing. He was very instrumental in helping shape me into the man I am today. Remember when he let Larry & me borrow the car & his mom had to get us from lockup in Fuquay-Varina. Melvin never judged us or stopped us from borrowing the car. We did however washed it many times afterwards. He may be gone from my sight but will never ever be forgotten. With love E Dwight Cotton , Holly Springs, NC

Next only to her Father and Grandpa, this man was absolutely adored by my step-daughter Maliah Banks. From coaching her in the 'AU' Basketball league and traveling all over the country for games; to taking her in as his own daughter, "coach" was his firs title but in short time the term "father" became a more befitting term of endearment. This general was the object of many pre and post game debates between other teammates who were competing for "Coach's" affirmation. Maliah's advantage was the fact that not only was she afforded the opportunity of spending time with him on the road but also during church on Sundays. Hands down, "Coacb Heggie" will not only be memorialized as a great leader and pillar of the community but will forever be the embodiment of resilience and tenacity!
On a personal note, his strength spoke volumes for which all who were around him were empowered to persevere beyond and despite life's challenges. On and off the court, he will forever be an undisputed champion. Long live the legacy of "Coach Heggie!
To the family, I stand in agreement with your continued healing and multiplied peace in this hour. Manifold blessings!
