Obituary For Raymond “Head” Earl Hicks
Raymond Earl Hicks, affectionately known as “Head," was born on November 10, 1953, in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, to the late Haywood Hicks, Sr. and Annie Mae Meadows Hicks. He was the fourth of six children. As a child, he attended and accepted Christ at St. Augusta Free Will Baptist Church in Fuquay-
Varina, NC.
After graduation from high school, Raymond enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in May 1972, where he served as an Anti-Tank Assaultman. His military service was marked by discipline, strength and unwavering commitment - qualities that remained with him throughout his life.
Later, Raymond continued his spirit of service as a firefighter with Sumter County in Pinewood, South Carolina. Whether serving his country or his community, Raymond took great pride in helping others and answering the call of service.
Raymond joined New Providence Baptist Church (Fuquay-Varina, NC) where he faithfully served on the Usher Board, the Welcome Ministry, and the Mission's Ministry (Food Bank). He served with a joyful spirit and a heart full of passion, always ready to lend a helping hand and greet others with a smile.
Raymond found love and companionship with Doris Evelyn Jones, whom he married on May 18, 2019. Their union brought him comfort, joy, and deep sense of belonging, and he cherished her wholeheartedly. During their marriage, he joined Mt. Peace Missionary Baptist Church (Raleigh, NC) where he faithfully served as a member of the choir. Raymond truly loved the fellowship of the church and took pride in presenting himself well - always “looking sharp” each time he entered the doors.
Raymond never met a stranger - he could hardly walk into a store without striking up a conversation with just about everyone he encountered. Known for his bold personality and colorful spirit, he brought laughter and a lasting presence wherever he went. He loved his family - nurtured unique relationship with each family member. He would babysit his nieces and nephews and then years later kept his great-nieces and nephews, signed up for carpool duty and he enjoyed every minute of it.
Raymond was a vibrant soul with a strong presence and unforgettable personality. He spoke his mind with confidence, always keeping it real no matter the moment. He stood firm in who he was and handled things head-on when he felt it was needed. With a quick wit and playful sense of humor, he had a way of catching your off guard and leaving you laughing. Raymond lived life on his own terms, growing and learning along the way, and through it all, his love of his family remained constant. Some even called him a real-life “Robin Hood,” as he has a heart for looking out for others in his own special way. To know “Head” was to experience joy, boldness, and a spirit that left a lasting mark.
Raymond was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Doris Evelyn Jones Hicks; his siblings, Donnie D. Hinton, Joann Booker, and Gary A. Hicks; his nephews, Wilbert Hinton, Jr., Gary A. Hicks., Jr.; and his niece, Jacqueline Booker.
Raymond leaves to cherish memories his beloved siblings: Haywood Hicks, Jr. (Deborah), Angela A. Hicks (Alan), and Ashley T. Player; his in-laws, Brenton Booker and Geraldine Beach Hicks; his devoted nieces, Shannon Hicks, Brenna Booker-Williams (Louis), Felecia Hicks-Smith (Derrick), Stacey Hicks, Necole Rasavong, Shayna Baker, and Tina Hinton; and his nephews, Reginald Hodge, Jr., Davion Brown, and a host of loving great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends, all of whom he cherished deeply and who will forever hold his memory close in their hearts.
Public viewing: 2:00 - 6:00 pm on April 7, 2026, at Trice Funeral Home Chapel, 127 N. West Street in Fuquay-Varina, NC 27526.
Funeral will be held 2:00 pm on April 8, 2026, at New Providence Missionary Baptist Church, 4813 Hilltop Needmore Road in Fuquay-Varina, NC 27526.
Burial: Starlight Memorial Gardens, Lois Lane in Holly Springs, NC 27540.

It's been a long time since I had seen him, but every time I would see him he would always have me laughing and it would always be good just being in his presence.
