John Romie Burt, Jr., affectionally known as βRomie Jrβ, was born on October 8, 1943, in Fuquay-Varina, NC, to the late Romie Burt and Golia Thorpe Burt. On June 18, 2026, he entered rest at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, NC.
At an early age, ROMIE nurtured his spiritual foundation by joining Bazzel Creek Baptist Church attending Sunday School at First Baptist Church for a while. Throughout his life's journey, his faith remained his anchor. After moving to the Washington, DC, area, he joined Maple Springs Baptist Church in Capitol Heights, MD. He continued his fellowship by attending both St. Augusta and New Providence churches. Romie lived with a deep sense of gratitude, and he often expressed to those he loved that, βGod is taking care of me.β
ROMIE spent the early years of his life in Fuquay-Varina. He graduated from Fuquay Consolidated High School and went on to attend Harris Barber College in Raleigh, NC. He also later took a course at the University of the District of Columbia in Washington, DC.
ROMIE was a remarkably happy and outgoing person who truly loved to talk and connect with others. He never met a stranger, and his joyful energy lifted every room he walked into. One of his greatest joys was giving nicknames to his family and friends - a reflection of his playful spirit and the deeply personal bond he shared with people he loved. ROMIE's warmth, laughter, and the special names he gave so freely will be deeply missed but forever cherished by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
While living in North Carolina, he worked various jobs, including driver for Capital Area Transit in Raleigh, NC, working as an insurance salesman for North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company, Haywood Funeral Home in Raleigh, NC (a job that he loved), and cutting hair as a barber at Fort Bragg, NC.
ROMIE later moved to the Washington, DC, area, where he was employed as a manager with Giant Food Stores. Utilizing his barbering roots, he also worked as a contract employee managing beauty and barber shops on military bases. ROMIE brought his career full circle by ending his time in the DC area doing what he loved, working as a barber in a shop located in District Heights, MD.
Upon his eventual return home to Fuquay-Varina, ROMIE was one of the founders of the Cultural Arts Society of Fuquay-Varina, Inc. He also worked for a brief time at the Food Lion Grocery Store until his health prevented him from continuing.
ROMIE was preceded in death by his parents, Romie and Golia Thorpe Burt; brothers, Dennis and Walter Burt, sister, Dazell Burt; two children, Monique Burt and an infant child; and two grandchildren, Michael Davis and Reginald Burt.
ROMIE leaves to cherish his memory; his children, Tonya Burt, Richard Myles Burt, Ronda Burt, Floyd Burt, Valencia Burt, Chantel Burt, Romel Burt, Mekiy'a Judd, and Amari Parks. He was also blessed with eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. ROMIE is also survived by his sisters, Etta Geneva Chesley of Temple Hills, MD, and Orlean Newton of Fuquay-Varina, NC; and a host of special nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends.
When you think of ROMIE JR., share a laugh, strike up a conversation with a stranger, and remember the bright light he brought into all of our lives.

To the family you all have my sincere sympathy for this is truly hard to accept. It was not long ago that we were at the Waffle house in Fuquay and we had a time laughing and reminiscing on old times especially about him and my late brother Cee Jaye. He told me how we were related and much more. Not knowing that this would be our last conversation together. He was my buddy and I am going to truly miss him. May God's continued blessings be with you now and in the days ahead. Rest in Heavenly peace RomieJr, your work here has been completed. Love to the family.
