It's unfortunate that Mrs. Mays isn't here to hear how her words in 7th grade affected me. She told me to wipe the grin off my face whenever I smiled, and I've carried that trauma ever since. I wanted to find a way to forgive her, but it seems I'll have to do that quietly, without her knowing. I hope she rests in peace and somehow understands this. Writing it out here helps me begin to move on, and for that, I'm grateful. By the way, I'm noticing the grin on her face. Perhaps I know how to smile Afterall. -- Former E.O. Green Student
Betty Jean Mayes was such an amazing woman. She was such a gracious and loving person and a true servant of the Lord. She had a radiant smile that showed how much she cared about others. She will be missed and may the Holy Spirit comfort all family and friends during this time of grief 💐💟✝️
4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:4-7
Accept my deepest condolences to the family! Her spirit will live on forever. May God's peace be with you!
My condolences to Cyril, Raymond, Michelle, Mary and the grandchildren. It is an emptiness that will be filled with precious memories. Surrounded by boys being the only girl, Mrs. Mayes rescued me many times. A quick ride to the store, a walk to Mrs. McShan's house, or sitting in the kitchen watching her cook. She was loving and patient. Her ability to make people, including me, feel special was her gift. Her light will forever shine.
My family family will always remember Mama Betty, she was the sweetest person to be around will remember the last time we talked.
Betty Jean Mayes,or as I used to call her Mother Mayes, will always be a true Angel on Earth to me and countless others. She was a very special person indeed and those who had the privilege to know her will never forget her kindness, gentle spirit and true devotion to God. May the Peace of the Lord be with the Mayes family & friends. C.S.Batts
Mrs. Mayes was a giant of an individual who made an enormous impact on the lives of so many, so many. She was an educator extraordinaire, a woman of strong faith, possessed exemplary character, attitude and sense of service. She was a faithful member of the Bethel AME Church, Oxnard and served in manay capacities. While we may miss Mrs. Mayes, we are comforted by the knowledge that one who is remembered never dies. RIP Mrs. Betty J. Mayes.

Ms Mayes was a wonderful presence at EO Green school. She taught both my daughters and was always eager to help them edit their essays for the Black History contests (with her help they always won). After we left Oxnard CA it was a pleasure to have her visit us here in Georgia. We will always remember her and will miss her. Prayers and blessings to her family. Love The Baugh Family
