On Monday, June 15, 2026, Reverand Amos Earl Staley entered into Eternal Rest.
Earl was born January 9, 1945, in Spartanburg, South Carolina to the late Carl H.
and Viola Carson Staley. Earl joined Zion Grove AME Zion Church at an early
age. He served as the Sunday School Superintendent and a member of the choir.
Earl was educated in the Polk County Schools system in Polk County, North
Carolina. He was a proud 1965 graduate of Carver High School in Spindale, North
Carolina. After graduating, Earl was employed with Stonecutter Mills and General
Fireproofing for a number of years before starting his own business, A.E. Staley
Pine Pallets.
Earl loved singing. At the age of nine, he began singing with Reverand Jesse T.
Sanford who affectionately called him “The Little Wonder Boy”. Around the age
of fifteen, Earl joined The Golden Trumpets, and he remained with them for sixty-
six years. During this time, Earl was the group manager and lead singer for many
years. He wrote several songs that are still enjoyed and sung by others today.
Earl was called into the ministry over twenty years ago. He had a deep passion for
preaching God’s Word. He served as an associate minister at Zion Grove AME
Zion Church until he was appointed as pastor of Zion Hill AME Zion Church in
Henrietta, North Carolina where he served for seven years. Earl returned to Zion
Grove and continued serving as long as his health permitted.
On January 9, 2016, Earl was joined in marriage to Mary Hines Gist. His late
wife, Florence Briscoe Staley, preceded him in death. From this union was born
two sons, Thomas and Eric.
Earl is predeceased by his parents, Carl and Viola Staley, brothers, Reverand Leroy
and Reverand Rob Roy Staley, brother-in-law, Johnny Lee Briscoe, and a step-granddaughter.
He leaves to cherish loving memories his wife Mary, sons Thomas (Wanda) and Eric (Tamara), stepchildren,
Reverand LeRone Moore (Tracy), Todd
Moore, and Tia Carrouthers (Will), fourteen grandchildren and ten great-
grandchildren, two brothers, Carl (Eloise) and John (Martha), and one sister, Ruth.
Sister-in-laws: Juanita, Dorothy, Minnie, Ann, Patricia (William), Juanita (Ben),
Catherine, Faye, and Barbara. Brother-in-laws: Bobby, George (Barbara), Calvin
(Veotis), Terry (Linda), and Donald (Sabrina). A host of nieces, nephews, family,
and friends.
Earl’s favorite Bible verses were Proverbs 3: 5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all thine
heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge
him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
Reverand Earl Staley touched the lives of many in his community and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Funeral Service will be held at Zion Grove A.M.E Zion Church on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at 1:00 PM. The Family will receive friends Tuesday, June 23, 2026, from 5-7 @ the funeral home.
