Mrs. Betty Smith, born Betty Lynn Lyons to the late Cora Martin and Ted Lyons Sr. in
Knoxville Tennessee, gained her wings Sunday March 23, 2025 in Oak Ridge, TN. after a long illness. She was a stewardess and member of the Angelic Choir at Mattie E. Coleman CME Episcopal Church. Betty graduated from Austin High School. She gained a Business Associates Degree from National College and retired after 20+ years of customer service for the Kroger company. She was an Avon representative for over 25 years. Betty never missed the opportunity to go to the casino.
Betty was preceded in death by her mother and father, step father James McGhee Sr., brothers Dwight, Larry and Michael Tipton Sr., Ted Lyons Jr. and James McGhee Jr. Beloved aunts Margaret “Babe” Martin, Leona “Jimmie” Martin-Muncie, Uncle Sam Martin and very special cousin, Shirley “Coo” Martin.
She loved her two children, whom she leaves behind; Dimitrious Martin (Ty), John Smith Jr., brother David “Butch” Lyons, husband of 57 years, John Sr. “Ducky,” best friend for life and beyond, Lela Mattress-Harris, a host of niece‘s, nephew‘s, cousin‘s and friends.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 1, 2025 from 11:30-12:00 with the Celebration of Life Service to begin at 12:00 noon at the Unity Mortuary Chapel.
The final resting place will be held at the East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery (John Sevier) immediately following the service.
