William Austin Sutton departed this life on August 5, 2024, at the Ben Atchley Tennessee State Veterans Home. Born on March 14, 1946, in Selma, Alabama, he is the second of five children born to Walter R., Sr., and Laurena Austin Sutton. He attended public schools in Selma, graduating from the R. B. Hudson High School in 1964; he is a 1968 graduate of Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, with a degree in Biology/Chemistry.
William, familiarly known as Bill, taught biology in Dallas and Wilcox Counties in Alabama before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1973. He served for eight years, being honorably discharged in 1981 with the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his youngest sister Fannie. He leaves to cherish his memory two sons, Frederick D. (Mari), Prosper, TX, and Jonathan E. Williams, Knoxville; two sisters, Carolyn, Knoxville, and Mary S. Salaam, Montgomery, AL; one brother, Walter R., Jr. (Annie), La Follette; two grandsons, one great-grandson, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at the Fourth United Presbyterian Church, 1323 N. Broadway, on Saturday, August 24, 2024. The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. with the service beginning at 1:30 p.m.
