Reverend David Sonny Hayward Sr. was born on February 26, 1928, in Charleston County, South Carolina. He was the youngest of eight children born to the union of Joe Heyward and Eva Grant Heyward. He was educated in the Charleston County school system and graduated from Burke Industrial High School in 1945.
Reverend Hayward received his Bachelor of Theology on May 23, 1970, from Jameson Bible Institute, a division of Grambling State University, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He went on to further his studies and in 1989 he received a Medical Assistant Certification from Bryman National Educational Center in Chicago, Illinois.
Reverend Hayward was honorably retired in 1996 after serving 34 years from the Southeast Missouri, Illinois and Wisconsin Annual Conference of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.
Reverend Hayward is preceded in death by his wife Gertrude Hayward; parents; Joe and Eva Heyward; siblings; Saul Heyward, Elder Eugene Hayward, Rev. Joseph Hayward Jr., Edwin Heyward, Leon Heyward, Izetta Doctor, Eva Francis Green; and children; David Hayward Jr., Elder Barbara White, Jessie Heyward, Steve Heyward.
Reverend Hayward will be greatly missed by those who knew him and will forever live in the hearts of those who love him. He leaves to cherish his memories, his children; Mabel Elizabeth (John) Washington, David Clifford (Marilyn) Heyward, Donald (Liz) Byrd, and Sandra Renee (Frank) Black; 18 grandchildren, 36 Great grandchildren, 13 Great-Great Grandchildren, and a host of many loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
