Obituary For Robert Magwood,Sr.

Robert Magwood, Sr., beloved husband, father, community leader, and devoted servant, was born and raised on Johns Island, South Carolina. His early years on the island shaped the strong values of family, service, and faith that would guide his path throughout his life. After attending Haut Gap High School, “Bob” along with his family moved to Brooklyn, NY in 1969, where he graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School. He also attended New York City College of Technology and John Jay College (CUNY) where he earned an Associate Degree in Liberal Arts. While in New York, he met and later married his devoted wife of 50 years, Lucinda Simmons, in 1975 and together they started a family rooted in love. The two moved back to Johns Island in1984, where they continued to grow the family, welcoming their youngest son Randall in1985. Bob became a dedicated public servant when he joined the Charleston City Police Department as a Police Officer. During his career, he dedicated eight years as a member of the Elite Charleston Police SWAT Team. As one of only 12 officers on the Team, this role was a testament to his exceptional skill, courage, and integrity. He was also involved in the department’s Weed and Seed Program. Working toward higher education, Robert returned to college and earned his Bachelors Degree from the College of Charleston, and his Master of Arts Degree in Education in 2000 from the Citadel Military College. In 2000 he was also promoted to Corporal. Robert retired in 2009 after twenty-five years of service. Upon retirement, Bob remained a pillar of the community. As a long-time member of Bethlehem St. James United Methodist Church, he was a cherished member of the Men's Choir and served as Vice President of the Methodist Men’s Organization. He loved sharing his gift of singing and the congregants looked forward to the weeks when he sang as Choir Leader and performed stirring selections from The Mighty Clouds of Joy. His community service and dedication extended far beyond the walls of the church. He was a member of Zion Temple Lodge #49, Prince Hall F. & A.M. Robert was a tireless advocate for youth and education. His three sons participated with the Lowcountry Little League baseball team and played football and basketball for their school. He attended sports matches, band meets and other activities with his children when possible. Robert also served as PTA president at Mt. Zion Elementary and St. Johns High Schools, served as a school liaison and truancy officer, and participated actively in youth programs and read to children. His mentorship, attention and affection made a positive impact on the lives of many young people. He was awarded the Distinguished Survivor Certificate by the South Carolina Victims Assistance Network (SCVAN). This award is given to a crime victim/ survivor or family member of a victim that has persevered through adversity and tragedy. After the death of his son Robert, Jr., for several years he and his wife have given scholarships to graduating seniors at St. John’s High School in memory of their son. The family gives a sincere “Thank You” to the Charleston City Police Department, the Survivors of Homicide Support Group which is a collaborative effort between Charleston County Sheriff’s Office and The National Crime Victims Research and Treatment Center at MUSC, and the South Carolina Victim Assistance Network (SCVAN) for the many years (19) of support and help given to our family. Bob was preceded in death by his oldest son: Robert Magwood, Jr.; mother: Ella Magwood; and his sister: Dorothy Magwood. He has left behind to cherish his memories, his beloved wife: Lucinda S. Magwood; his four children: Nicole Kohles (Steven), Karnellia F. Magwood, Ryan Magwood (Michelle), and Randall Magwood; his beautiful and wonderful grandchildren: Gaea Kohles-Jones (Dominic), Alexander Kohles, Sincere Magwood, Yashar Magwood, Anahyah Magwood and Tahj Charles (step grandchild); one beautiful great-grandchild: Azaria Jones; two brothers: Ernest “Tito” Magwood and Harrison Magwood (Gloria); an aunt; his lifelong and phenomenal best friend: Ralph Williamston; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, eight godchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Robert had a solid and supportive presence within his community, and he leaves behind a legacy of love, service, unwavering faith, and devotion. His impact has touched generations, and his story will continue to be written in the hearts of those he served, protected, and uplifted.

Mr. Robert Magwood's Celebration of Life Service will be held 11am, Friday, May 30, 2025 at Bethlehem-St James United Methodist Church, 2419 Bohicket Road, John's Island, SC 29455. Interment: Churchyard Cemetery. There will be no lie in state the day of service. Public viewing will be held Thursday, May 29, 2025, 3pm until 7pm at Walker's Mortuary Chapel.
