Ethel Stephens-Hardy, age 82, of Stockbridge, Georgia entered into rest on January 18, 2021.
Celebration of Life service details will be announced at a later date.
Ethel Maud Stephens-Hardy was born to Etheyln (Ethel) Roberts and James Stephens on July 17, 1938 in Griffin, Georgia. Ethel was the only child of this union. Later in her life Ethel and her mother relocated from Griffin, Georgia to Inwood, New York. On Nov 15th 1951, Ethel’s mother, Ethelyn Roberts married William Morton and adopted Ethel as his daughter. Ethel graduated from Lawrence High School in 1957, and later attended South Nassau Community College. Ethel had a long career with Mobil Oil (Exxon-Mobil) in Far Rockaway, NY, and moved to her down digs in Rochdale Village, Queens, N.Y. On August 1st, 1987, Ethel married Thentress Hardy Jr., of Jamaica, New York, and became the mother to Denise Hardy (King) and Cleon Hardy. After Retiring from Mobil Oil, Ethel worked with King Kullen Supermarkets as an Administrative Assistant, and also worked in the Medical Billing field; from which she retired from in 2003. Ethel was a lifelong member of Bethel AME Church in Far Rockaway, New York and was the lead for the Women’s Day in 1999. Ethel always expanded her love for others, as demonstrated by hosting dinner parties for family and friends; both at her house and at her mother’s house during the summers. Ethel had a graceful appearance and was always the “diva” of the party. She was playful, inspiring and extremely generous. Ethel enjoyed dancing and listening to music, and loved to get her “boogie on” in the garage while listening to James Brown’s music. One of her favorite sayings when someone was dressed up was “You are as hot as a 45 caliber - Pow Pow!” On the evening of January 18th 2021 Ethel Stephens-Hardy quietly and peacefully transitioned from this life to rest with the Lord. She was preceded in death by her parents Ethelyn Roberts-Morton, William Morton and James Stephens. Wonderful heartfelt memories of Ethel will be cherished by her husband, Thentress (Ted) Hardy Jr. of Georgia; daughter Denise King; son-in-law Alfred King of New Jersey; son Cleon Hardy; daughter-in-law Kicia Hardy of Georgia; four grandchildren; Camille King, Corin King, Bryce Hardy and Jordan Hardy; brother Gregory Johnson of Florida; Goddaughter Zina Washington of South Carolina; multiple cousins, including Gertrude Wilson of Maryland, and a number of very special friends who loved her, including Barbara Bailey, Gladys Keller, Jackie Griffith and Donna Jackson.

I have wonderful memories of Ethel during the 35 years of our friendship. Ethel was a joyous person with an infectious laugh and engaging smile. I remember her numerous hats and always admired how she could "rock" the bhat that she would wear to church, luncheons or other suitable occasion. She was the consummate hostess who took pride in entertaining with style and grace. A visit with the Hardy's ensured an enjoyable time. May she rest in peace and family take comfort in a life well lived. Melvina and Earl.
