Mr. Frank Russell Newman, Sr. died peacefully with family at his side on March 4, 2017, at Quail Creek Nursing Facility in Springfield, Mo. The youngest son of nine children was born April 29, 1930, in Kansas City, KS, to the late Alexander R. Newman and Isabell (Crawford) Newman. He attended public schools in Kansas City, KS.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture from Emporia State University, completed a Master's degree in Educational Administration at University of Kansas (KU) and completed doctoral coursework towards a Ph.D. in Administration at KU. On June 8, 1953, Frank enlisted in the United States Army.
He achieved the rank of Corporal and was recommended for Platoon Leaders Class and the Officer Candidate Course of the United States Marine Corps Reserve. He was honorably discharged from the Army. From 1953 until 1994, Frank taught in both the Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri Public School Districts and became a principal in the Kansas City, Missouri Public School District. On Oct. 25, 1953, Frank married the love of his life Dorothy Jeanne Berry who preceded him in glory after 59 years of marriage. This union produced two children, Honoria M. Newman and Frank R. Newman, Jr. Frank was a longtime member of Faith Lutheran Church, Kansas City, KS, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, Theta Boule and Ivanhoe Club. He is survived by daughter Honoria M. Newman and fiance Jeffery Cohen of Baltimore, MD; son, Dr. Frank R. Newman, Jr., daughter-in-law Dr. Heather Newman, four grandchildren, Addisyn, Greyson, Grant and Weston of Springfield, MO; sister, Learllene Mason and nephew Jonathan Mason of Kansas City, KS; sister, Jeanette Nichols, brother-in-law, Nick Nichols of Los Angeles, CA; a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of loving friends. The memorial service will be held on March 23, at Watkins Heritage Chapel, 4000 Emanuel Cleaver II Boulevard, Kansas City, MO 64130 (816) 861-3030, (816) 861-3040 (Fax). The family visitation is 9 to 10 a.m.; the Omega Service by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is 10 a.m., and the memorial service is at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be sent to the Ivy Community Service Education Foundation/the Dr. Dorothy J Newman Scholarship Fund.
