Mrs. Carson was born in Rosedale, a Black community in Homewood AL, the daughter of the late William McKinley White, Sr and Louisiana Johnson White. She was the ninth of fifteen children. Mrs. Carson attended Rosedale Elem and High School through the 10th grade, then enrolled in the former Industrial High School, the first high school for Blacks in Birmingham; this school later became Parker High School.
After high school Mrs. Carson attended Clark College, now Clark Atlanta University, in Atlanta. In September of 1948, she transferred to Miles Memorial College in Birmingham, and in 1950 received a B.A. degree. Other studies were done at Earlham College, Ohio Wesleyan University, and Grambling College. Mrs. Carson received a master of education degree from the University of Georgia and the School Social Worker Certification from Atlanta University. Mrs. Carsonโs teaching career spans 40 years with three years in Dixon Mill, AL and thirty-seven years in various roles in Greensboro, GA culminating her as the districtโs school social worker before retiring in 1990. Her dedication to the students and the community of Greene County led her to run and be elected to the Greene County Board of Education as the first women to hold that position, serving from 1996-2000.
A faithful member of Historic Springfield Baptist Church, Mrs. Carson was always very active in school and community projects, often directing and co-sponsoring many of these activities, such as the Family Violence Council, Christmas Stocking Organization, Community Service Board, Action Incorporated, Friends of the Library, Library Board, Chamber of Commerce Education Committee and Habitat for Humanity. Mrs. Carson also proudly served as an HSBC Sunday School Superintendent and teacher, a member of the Mass Choir and Senior Mission. Mrs. Carson is also a Life Member and Diamond Soror with 77 years of active service to her beloved Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. In recognition of her remarkable service to the school system and her lasting influence on the students and community of Greene County, the Board of Education voted to name the new middle school in her honor. Anita White Carson Middle School continues to serve as a living tribute to her lifeโs work and unwavering devotion to education. (And to think she originally didnโt want to be a Teacher)
