Charlie Ed Woods was born on July 18, 1945, and was raised in Siloam,
Ga. He attended school at Floyd T. Corey in Greene County until he
obtained employment as a Pulp Wood logger. Through his adult years he
gained employment as a custodian at Athens General Hospital (now
known as Piedmont Athens Regional) where he worked his way up to
supervisor. After several years of employment, Charlie found a love for
truck driving which he continued employment until becoming medically
disabled.
At the age of 15, while chopping wood in the backyard, Charlie realized
his gift of singing after an encounter with God. Although starting his
singing career in secular music, he was eventually called by God to sing
gospel music. After singing with various gospel groups, he found himself
longing for a relationship with God and was led back to his church home,
The New Springfield Baptist Church where he gave his life to Christ.
During his membership, Charlie began singing with the New Springfield
Senior choir and male chorus, where he was selected as president. His
love for quartet music never died so he joined The True Tone Gospel
Singers as one of their lead singers. Charlie continued to give praises to
God in church until his health declined but continued to have a praise in
his heart even unto his
departure.
Preceding him in death are his mother Viola Woods and his father
Edward Thornton. In addition to his parents, three brothers, Dennis
Turner, Robert Lee Corry, and Timothy Thornton.
Charlie is survived by his devoted children Candace and Courtney
Woods. One grandson, Coureyon Woods. Five siblings Kathleen (Earlie)
Armour, Annie Sue Thornton, Franklin Thornton, Gail Lewis, and Kathleen
Lewis. And a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives.
Service were held Sunday, May 28, 2023 from the New Springfield Baptist Church 4300 Hwy 15S, Siloam, GA at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Roi Johnson, Eulogist.
